Indiana Jones and the Great Circle - coming in 2024

But with games like RoboCop: Rogue City, Evil Dead: The Game, Friday the 13th, Hogwarts: Legacy, etc. being embraced by gamers - it's clear that there's a thirst for some movie based games to come back.
The main reason these titles are being embraced by gamers is that they are - fundamentally - good games. While having a familiar IP tied to a product can garner some extra eyeballs, they still won't float if they ultimately turn out to be stinkers.

Licensed games used to be underwhelming for the longest while for a simple reason: They were being made to coincide with the release of some film or other, which set the dev team clearly defined constraints and a deadline - and the result was invariably something bland and characterless. In essence, these games were designed to be cash grabs from the get-go.

When the revival of a dormant IP is done solely in game form with no accompanying movie, the game can be released when it's ready to be released and in the shape the devs wanted to release it. Ironically, there were people here in this very thread clamoring for news about the new Indy game to coincide with the release of DoD - the very practice that usually leads to yet another utterly forgettable experience.

What's funny is that the response to this new Indy game highlights a key difference in gaming and film.

There's a clear thirst in gaming or franchise IP games based on films, as there's been a deficit of them for a long time. But with games like RoboCop: Rogue City, Evil Dead: The Game, Friday the 13th, Hogwarts: Legacy, etc. being embraced by gamers - it's clear that there's a thirst for some movie based games to come back.

But in film, franchise IPs are stale, distrusted, not met with excitement and it seems like filmgoers don't care about older franchises.

It's a clear contrast.
I think it also has to do with the fact that film is fundamentally more ineflexible than what we can do with video games these days like how tv has been flexing its ability to flesh out characters in long form.

People who grew up with those franchises often also reject older versions of the characters, suceeding spinoffs, AI or recasting. Many want what cannot be done- for it to continue as it was preserving that lightning in a bottle moment of the perfect casts, story and direction.

Videos games can continue the proverbial glory days but also give them agency. They also ironically circumvent criticisms of using an actor's likeness somehwat compared to the AI fight.

Looks like that could be a Pat Roach type character at 0:06.
Yep, looks like it to me too. I think we see Indy fighting him in the long trailer for a brief second.

I suppose it will be one of those boss fights where if you just stood your ground and fought him you'd get the stuffing knocked out of you unless you figured out the strategy to beating him. It will be fun because part of me will want to test how far I can get using the whip and fists only.

Also, probably gonna consider a whip and fists only run maybe (though I dobt ammo will be plentiful).

December 2024 release date (highly tentative) and a potential Playstation 5 version of the game as well.
December is not the release date I was expecting, but I am fine with letting them work on it for longer. As much as I loved the reveal, it did seem to lack some polish in a few areas.

Great find! Wow, glad they're reconsidering the exclusivity deal.

Much as Uncharted probably helped drive PS sales, it's exclusivity is why Naughty Dog got stuck in an awkward position when they wanted to release the last 2 games on PC.

Awkward how? After all, Sony's done an about face regarding PC releases over the last few years. Most of their formerly exclusive catalogue is today available to the master race.

In any case, even if a PS version of CC (man, that acronym kind of lacks punch) is coming, it probably won't see the shelves until Microsoft is sure the game's not going to sell any XBox copies (or XBoxes) to those who don't feel like waiting.

Yes, but not Uncharted 1-3. Had it been available on the PC, it would not be in the situation the Legacy of Thieves Collection was in, with new players to the series starting with the last two games, then having to look for a PS3-PS5, if at all. So much of the narrative impact comes from playing the original trilogy.

Only nuts like me, for example, bought a PSVita to play the Vita exclusive Golden Abyss.

In any case, I'm glad I switched to PC before this myself otherwise.

So a typical 6 months exclusivity probably, maybe a deal Disney demanded from day 1.

It is not like Indiana Jones will sell many copies or xboxen half a year later in early summer.

Or a year.

Regardless, the looming PS release is probably good news only to a more casual player - it's still going to be an agonizing wait for the PS5 owners on this forum, since every gamer in this little joint of ours is probably chomping at the bit to play this. (Unless it proves to be a total stinker, that is.) I can imagine how it would be for me if this was a Sony exclusive - I could be quite confident that it'll eventually land on my preferred platform, but any PS5 sales in the local electronics stores would suddenly start looking real enticing.

I am.happy. The more platforms, the more people get to play the game. I just have to avoid this topic like the plague while I wait for the PS5 release. A physical release would look great between the Indy blurays

I jumped on the PS5 train with the slim model (I waited because I knew the second I bought the OG, they slim would announce).

So I'd be happy to have Indy on it so I don't have to buy an Xbox. I've got enough to keep me busy for now.

Just beat Stray, Resident Evil: Village and now I'm onto Lies of P.

If the rumors are true some wild changes are coming to gaming as a whole. Microsoft might not just be removing exclusivity for a few games or sending them over to Switch and Playstation after a few months, but pretty much going full third party. As in just making games for everyone. Would they even bother with making a new console at that point? It's still just rumors, and might be false. But yeah it's probably wise to put any plans to get an Xbox on the shelf for now.

Apparently Xbox boss Phil Spencer will be revealing something next week.

From the start Microsoft lost money on their xbox hardware to make money from the games on it. Going third party instead of trying to beat Sony (Nintendo) would have made a third party game division much more profitable from day one. Sony clings to it's hardware still while Microsoft more or less went a scalable software/hardware route with games running on PCs as well as slower and faster xboxen plus streaming devices.

Do it, Microsoft.

Well. You can play the 3 first Uncharted on PC with and emulator.

Phil Spencer's demeanor gives off a "Look...we need to talk..." vibes. I don't think it'll be good news for Xbox users who are hoping for the brand to stay viably exclusive.

Microsoft had to show their hand when they were getting the Activision Blizzard deal through the door and straight up admitted that they were third this console generation. Their Gamepass model started off extremely well but those numbers are apparently fading as well. I would think that Microsoft, being the behemoth that they are, wouldn't really mind a few losses here and there as long as they saw profit in their long term predictions. But Xbox has been moving towards a "play anywhere" mentality for some time now, and although it has been firmly in their own ecosystem they might be ready to branch out further. Sony are probably not inclined to offer Xbox Gamepass on the Playstation because their own business model seems to be doing fine so Xbox might as well give up a few exclusives to make some money that way.
My guess is, older franchises being released on Playstation and Switch, but the new ones still having some amount of timed exclusivity. Sony is already doing that with some PS exclusives coming out on PC after a chunk of time.
We are on a road heading towards some cloud based service thingy were we can just buy games through the TV but although I have given up on buying physical games long ago I still prefer the consoles and would prefer all three console manufacturers keep that part of the industry going. And it is important that all of them do well, something the tribal fanboys have a very hard time grasping.
So yeah maybe we get Indy on the Playstation at some point, maybe even sooner than later, but I would not like if it is because Xbox has been forced to do it.
