but IMO Mangold compounded it by making Indy too depressed/disillusioned/grumpy for way too long, and not giving him his mojo back in an uplifting finale.
Most of us Indy geeks liked DoD, a few loved it - but for most casual audiences it simply misfired as a result of these two factors.
I understand that this is your reaction to the film. There are others who agree with you.

But where is the data that shows that this is the consensus opinion?

I agree it turned out to be a niche project.
But surely the Disney suits and Mangold himself didn't set out to make one?

Of course it was always going to be an uphill struggle with an octogenarian actor in the lead, but IMO Mangold compounded it by making Indy too depressed/disillusioned/grumpy for way too long, and not giving him his mojo back in an uplifting finale.

Just for the record I believe Mangold did a fantastic job recapturing the OT spirit in the prologue, but that's the high point in the movie. It's all downhill from there.
I agree with all these things. The goal should've been to make a movie that people want to see multiple times. I'm a huge Indy fan and I saw it in theaters twice... and even that was a bit much for me.

This is my main problem with DoD (although I generally like it). Especially that Mangold himself said it was the basic conept of the movie: we start with (1) Indy in his prime time, then (2) we show him without his mojo and then (3) he slowly gains it back during an adventure.
1 and 2 were present, but 3 is mostly missing.

Indy lost his mojo by doing the most Indiana jones thing by searching for Archimedes tomb holding the macguffin he was after all along? LOL

Some here just wanted Indy to smile more. That’s it. Other than that, Indy does the exact thing you’d expect him to do, just like in every Indiana Jones movie

I'm just glad it exists. Still can't believe I saw a new Indiana Jones movie in the theater in 2023. In the 80's I never would have believed that.

It's like Indiana Jones found and brought us the greatest artifact of all -- a previously unseen Indiana Jones film.
