Was young Indy really necessary?
 

No offense to fans of the series at all. It seems like Lucas seems to have a fascination with delving into his characters' childhood, never understood it myself, as much as I love Indy and Star Wars they just weren't deep enough to spark my interest in seeing the characters backstory. With young indy it just felt like a history channel re-enactment most of the time. In my opinion I don't think there was any need to see a young indy, just like there as no need to see a young darth vader, what is your opinion on this?

Was it necessary?Not at all,But thank god it was made! One thing I do love is exploration of my favorite fictional characters history,Seeing what shapes and molds them into the character I love.Young Indy did just that for me and not to mention it was one hell of a show.

Just out of curiousity Indyfan85,What episodes have you seen?

Young Indy was a really great show that explained alot about the Indiana Jones character. I have volume I and II, seen every episode, and The best part is when they show a little inside development.

What I mean by that, The events in YIJ prepare indiana for who he ultimately becomes. For example in the YIJ series Chapter 1: My First Adventure (Egypt - 1908) he was kidnapped by slave-trading bandits. He would have been sold into slavery. This would eventually strike a major nerve to indy in the temple of doom. In temple of doom, though the thought of pursuing the stones would be great, he still wasn't convinced of the risks, until......they mentioned "they took away all the children". Lets not forget that after he gets the stones after the collapsing ceiling scene, hears the cries of children and pursues to investigate. well I guess you would know what happens next.

Another YIJ moment would be in Chapter 10: The Phantom Train of Doom (Germany/East Africa - 1916). Up until this episode, Indiana had never been introduced to individuals who literally "make it up as they go", this group called "The Old and the Bold" taught Indy the importance of improvisation and to never depend on a plan as a concrete thing, always be prepared to adapt.

Now as a result from this point on in the series, you can literally see Indy's transformation with this new approach. Now in the films, how many times have we seen Indy adapt to his surroundings and find a way out???

Now lets also acknowledge that YIJ did a fantastic job of explaining how Indy's comprehension of world knowledge and academics came about. Between Ch.1 to Ch.5, Indy's father is going around the world giving lectures. The family tags along with the inclusion of Miss Helen Seymour, who is Indy's tutor through out the trip. In these chapters you begin to see the sorts of academics Indiana is introduced as a child while traveling the world. In countless scenes, you see Indy huddled over a pile of books while Miss Helen Seymour gives him the introduction to subjects and locations they are currently visiting.


You can obviously apply this to the films because, Indy is now a Ph.D and a professor. He must have been doing something right as a child to make it all the way to a Ph.D, right?

Well, I know there is ALOT more that I haven't placed, I guess this is just an introduction, I'm sure that by monday this thread will be in heavy circulation. If you got anything, lets talk about it:up:

Movies in general aren't necessary, but it sure is good they made them.

My thinking exactly! This is all entertainment - None of it is truly necessary. If people don't like something they don't need to watch it.

what I hate is that people will go on a thread about continuing Young Indy with a season 4 and then say "don't do a season 4! it's retarded and unneeded and stupid! and nobody wants it!" my response to all you...

well maybe 'necessary' was the wrong choice of words.

I've seen a few episodes but they were mostly with the YOUNG young indy, not sean patrick, I have only seen the episode 'mystery of the blues' with him in it and it was ok.

You should watch one of the ones that really represent Sean's Indy, like Oganga and Palestine. Those are the episodes, that really made Sean a great Indy!:whip:
