Yeah, that does look pretty good. I think I'll be ordering this one. It'll need some paint though, but I can definitely see how it could work really well.

I had the same thought. I'll be keeping my eyes open for another Horse Indy.

Trying a picture post

Bear with me here - trying to figure out if picture posting works! (Been wanting to do this for a while...)

If it works there's a Ark crate for you

Goonie 09-14-2008 11:49 PM

^Nice crate! Did you use soloboy5607's graphics or did you make your own?

I still need to finish my crate off with some brackets for the carrying poles. I also want to make other Ark crates, the one with the smudged logo and one with the Top Secret logo and also a cracked Top Secret crate from Crystal Skull.

Once I get my Crystal Skeleton in the mail (need it for the size), I want to create an alien corpse crate, with the steel coffin inside and the mummified remains. And just for effect, I was thinking of lining it with those magnetic sheets you can buy.

NickTurner 09-15-2008 12:01 AM

Crate

Images were scanned from the "Best of the Lucasfilm Archives" book. Rest is balsa and craft sticks painted to match, plus chalk dust for that dusty desert look!

Fun fact: The crate seen in the back of the truck during the chase is different from the one seen in the back once Indy gets back to Cairo!

DutchIndy 09-15-2008 01:15 AM

Amazing crate, well done!

NickTurner 09-15-2008 01:25 AM

"Burned" logo crate

I suppose I should have mentioned that the reverse of the crate shows the "burned" logo version :-)

Goonie 09-15-2008 02:25 AM

^Nice job. I like the rope handles!

This has been mentioned before, I believe. No worries, though. :) I agree the likeness is pretty great, I'm just wondering about the compatibility of a head swap between those older SW figs and the newer IJ ones. Does anyone have any info as to how similar the scale is between the two? If it's possible, I may be able to get my hands on that figure for a good price, as my local comic shop has pretty much that entire line carded for pretty cheap. I'd love to take a crack at a custom Brody. A little sculpy hair on top of that head and a combo Henry Sr/Tie Indy body and torso, and you'd have a pretty good version. Paint the suit dark blue and it'd be spot on!

nevsky41 09-15-2008 05:56 PM

What do you think the likelihood of marauder doing a cast of Hanry Sr's jacket would be? I'm looking at doign several customs that would require that jacket (or at least look best with it), and as hard as Henry is to find, and expensive as he is to get on the secondary market, I think this could be a good alternative! Any chance we could write to them and see if they could do a a casting of it? I know I'd buy about 10 of them!

Indy-verse custom fodder!

Over the past few months, I've been making a small collection of figures to use as custom fodder for Indy-verse customs. Not always easy, since action figures in "real world" outfits are hard to come by.

But here are some pics of what I've managed to put together. Indy figures are show for size comparison...

The Jurassic Park 3 line has been used for SW custom fodder for several years now.

I only recently discovered this Alan Grant variant figure with the vest, which, despite limited articulation, would make a great base for just about any kind of figure, particularly in an outdoors, wilderness, jungle, desert or other kind of "adventure" setting.

The other Alan Grant figure in white is a little bulky (and also hampered by limited articulation), but is another solid and un-dated generic guy.

In this next picture on the left is a character (don't know the name) from the recent Speed Racer film line. These figures run a little short, but the scale looks perfect. He's just a short guy.

Give the outfit, stature and facial features, I think this guy would make a terrific gangster character or possibly a government bureaucrat. The lavender tie and handkerchief need to be repainted (red would look fine), but otherwise he's good to go.

In the middle is the Bruce Wayne figure from a recent line of Dark Knight 3 3/4" figures. They suffer from limited articulation (but thankfully have knees.) and this Bruce figure, though a little skinny, could be used for countless Indy-world characters.

In the next pic, Bruce is sporting a spiffy "trench coat", courtesy of the Golden Compass Sam Elliot figure. Sam is way too tall to fit in with this bunch, but his jacket makes a great trench coat for just about any of these scale of figures.

From another part of Gotham City comes Commissioner Gordon from the DC Infinite Heroes line.

The one on the left sports a cut down version of Sam Elliot's coat, making a perfect blazer.

I think Gordon is a great base for a Donovan figure and has fairly good articulation with both knees and elbows. Many other possibilities with this one.

There is an outstanding line of 3 3/4" Harry Potter figures by PopCo which are not available in the United States. I got this Harry on ebay and am very happy with it.

Good articulation all around. For customizers, a few dabs of paint could transform Harry into one of Indy's students at Marshall (or is it Barnett?) College. Remove the sweater and you have a solid male torso with tie for many other possibilities (possibly paired with the Sam Elliot coat.)

Last but not least is probably the closest thing we'll ever get to a Toht figure - the body from the Comic Con exclusive Black Suit Cobra Commander figure.

These babies are widely available, but terrifically expensive, on ebay. The blue blazer version is even more rare and pricey.

Here I've put on the head from one of the Imperial Officers EE pack and presto - instant Marcus or Donovan or any other character.

With the strong possibility that Toht himself may never see the light of day, this figure will probably only go up in price, but it's a terrific body with loads of custom potential.

And finally a group shot!

mister64 09-15-2008 06:36 PM

I really like that Donovan!

Did you have to do anything to the peg on the Cobra Commander body to get the Imperial Officer head to fit?

The officer head is a very loose fit. It has been delicately placed atop the peg, but will fall down onto the shoulders with only a very light touch.

Filling in much of the head hole with sculpey should easily do the trick.

Unfortunately, though not visible in these pics, there are some unpainted areas of the neck that are exposed, so some touching up there is also required - though not much.

Mutt Williams, with custom hat:

----------------------------

The figure itself is a single-carded Mutt (w/jacket) upper body with the motorcycle Mutt's legs. I put both bodies in super hot water to pop the waist joint (and to switch the hands!) After the Frankensteining, I painted Mutt's shirt white-ish, to match the movie.

The hat is a sanded down version of THIS BLUE HAT, which is from a G.I.Joe figure (Red Star, 1991). I had one laying around and it fits Mutt perfectly! I mixed up some Testors Acryl into a beige color and that was it! The paint bonded well with the hat and isn't tacky at all and doesn't chip either.

Now if Hasbro never makes one, oh well, this will do...

Goonie 09-16-2008 04:40 PM

^Nice work!  Something Hasbro probably will never give us.:(

pipecito2112YYZ 09-20-2008 06:28 AM

that's a awesome Mutt custom, pal!!!
now i want to know how can i remove the lower part /hips of these two figs, my ROTLA Indy (the one with the odd head) an the Deluxe Indy temple trap (with an awesome head sculpt), but sadly, both heads won't fit each other, so... is there any method to remove the pants, an make a switch?

Photobucket

well, the indy temple trap looks nice without the sculpted holster, an can hold a coiled whip, an a missing shoulder bag, looks just fine, aye?

Photobucket

because the one who gets left, will be just perfect for a "Mystery of the Blues" indy ;)

Enjoying all the great work on display here! I probably have an extra Red Star hat laying around somewhere that just might get the same custom treatment!

NickTurner 09-22-2008 01:26 AM

Those eyes!

Just had a thought - how many out there (who would not normally think of yourself as a "customizer") have tried to fix the eyes? Not wanting to paint unless I really had to, I have "saved" many figures by *carefully* scraping a little off the bottom off the eyes with a craft knife (and magnifying lens!). Sure beats having a surprised/drugged-out Indy figure. Wish I'd done before/after pics now to show what I mean.

I emailed Hasbro about the eyes the first day of release but gave up on them fixing them...

Now I buy just about any figure and fix it up.

EddyW 09-22-2008 04:22 AM

That temple trap figure actually looks pretty good. I saw it in the shop and gave it a pass, basically because as a whole I didn't like it much (especially the trap part) but now that I see a close up of the figure I might get it and give it a paint over. It's a shame his legs have no joints, so if you figure out how to swap the legs, I'd be interested in hearing that.

well the figure it's AMAZING, the only cons are the lack of pegs of the legs, an no gun holster/belt/bullwhip, i pass it from my ROTLA indy with crappy head.
i like the head sculpt, now looking for a indy with horse, an make a "Area 51 Indy" with gray hair an all that :) :whip:

I've been away for a while - but great continuing custom work everyone ! I decided to go back and tweak my Donovan figure. Going back to the DVD I noticed that he wore boots in the Grail Temple scene, and that his jacket was a lot lighter than his trousers. I also scored a Veers head !

So - from this...

To this...

My next figure will debut in the GTG Customs Indy Contest at the start of October.

Ska 09-24-2008 07:23 AM

Wow...it went from amazing to amazing'er!

The only problem I have with that Donovan is that it looks too accurate to stand beside that "Elsa" (who's face doesn't look anything like Alison Doody).

Donovan's head looks perfect now.

Great work (as always)!

bonoferox 09-24-2008 08:43 AM

Pictures dont work for me :( any chance of providing a link?

AirPirate 09-24-2008 09:15 AM

Great Donovan!! Can anyone tell me how to do a face transplant? A tutorial would be great!
Thanks!
