Disney Release Schedule (US/CAN)

A relatively minor note, so I'm not changing my list for it just yet...

According to directors Joe and Anthony Russo, their "Avengers: Infinity War" films are due to be re-titled -- once they come up with the new ones.

Despite the two movies being filmed together, the directors say that the current titles are misleading because each film will be its own story, and NOT one story split into two movies.

(They don't say so, but I'll hazard a guess that one of the flicks will get to keep "Infinity War" as its subtitle.)

Latest Updates:
- A move has finally been made in the previously mentioned "Avengers" title situation. The 2018 film is keeping the "Infinity War" subtitle (and losing the "Part I") while the 2019 film is now simply listed as an "Untitled Avengers" film.

I was thinking about this of late, did studios do this in the 90's, but the only reason we know about it now, is cause of the 'net?

Like, could a Blue Harvest ever happen again?

So, Marvel's The Inhumans property, which was taken off the film schedule not too long ago, is being developed into TV series instead.

But the first two episodes will be presented in IMAX theaters worldwide, for a 2-week run in September 2017.

I can't decide if I should include that on the list or not.

The placeholder thing? It's a more recent phenomenon. I mean, I've been tracking online movie news since I was a teenager in the late 90's, and I don't recall things like that until the last... I'd say 5 years.

I think for the most part it's just slapping a bunch of dates on the calendar and deciding what they'll be later on.

But the Blue Harvest thing... it actually happened to a couple lower budget films in the last year. That psuedo-sequel to Cloverfield and that recent Blair Witch sequel both had false names until fairly late in the game.

Latest Updates:
- While it hasn't yet been announced if it was removed or delayed, the July 2017 Live-Action Fairy Tale wasn't mentioned in Disney's annual slate preview. I'm taking it off the schedule, until further notice.

- I've also decided to add a new section for those odd projects that have begun filming, but whose dates remain TBD.

In the realm of "films to expect to be added in the near future"

Several projects have had recent updates that indicate a plan to film this year.

- They recently hired Alex Timbers to film a young Cruella De Ville movie starring Emma Stone. (Supposedly a film in the same vein as "Maleficent") The studio was pretty hot on this project and wanted to get it going last year (which *might* account for the former July 2017 placeholder.)

- At last report, it sounded like the Adam Shankman-directed "Enchanted" sequel was eyeing a summer shoot.

- Tim Burton's take on "Dumbo" has begun the casting process, with Will Smith and Tom Hanks being among the first candidates to be named. Since it's said that it would conflict with Smith's schedule on the planned "Bad Boys" sequel, we can extrapolate that filming could be up for a start this spring.

Pale Horse was wondering if the studios could still pull off a "Blue Harvest" scenario... The following sounds like it could be new example of it.

Curiously, the Summer 2017 Fairy Tale movie was included on Disney's slate graphic at CinemaCon last night.

(Which I'll just link to because it's going to stretch the frame too far.)

So I'm re-adding the untitled and unadvertised movie that seemingly comes out in 4 months.

Latest Updates:
- ALSO: Updated with the full title of "Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck it Ralph 2"

While I'm holding out hope for an update in the near future, we might be waiting another month for the next schedule change if they save further announcements for D23 Expo.

So with little else going on, I thought I'd look at Moedred's post about box office predictions and see how some have turned out...

Moedred said:
Disney will have the top 5 international releases when Rogue One is finished (though it bumps Doctor Strange from the top 10). Can they repeat such a feat? Here's 2017 according to HSX, the predicted first 4 weeks domestic totals:

Beauty and the Beast - Mar 17, 2017 $268.63
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - May 05, 2017 $328.49
Pirates of the Caribbean 5 - May 26, 2017 $140.35

So far, the Disney ones seem to have been underestimated across the board.

- Beauty and the Beast was the most significantly different, with $441.01M by week 4. It presently sits at an amazing $502.92M.

- Guardians 2 was a little closer, $345.74M. Now in the middle of week 6, it's up to $367.19M.

- Pirates 5 will come closest to the mark, but still go over. As of day 18, it's up to $137.11M and could hit the predicted $140M mark by/around day 21. At this point, I'd predict a number around $146M-148M as its four week total. It will likely spend the rest of its run inching towards $160M.

Worldwide, these films currently make up three of 2017's Top Five.

- Beauty and the Beast is at $1,247,884,156 as the No. 1 film of the year so far. (Fun fact: It's already made more worldwide than any 2016 release.)

- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is at $834,365,422, making the number 3 film. (Fate of the Furious is number two. Childish pun intended.)

- And Pirates's stronger overseas sales have put it at No. 5 with $601,756,816 so far.
