New opening temple of the forbidden eye

Hey everyone,

Ran into Disney a few days ago, didn't have time to stay but I was dropping my girlfriend off and I wanted to go on Indy. I noticed that the animatronic in the first room, the one holding back the doors, seems to be completely new. Not only that but there's a new light effect that casts the iconic shadow of the man with the hat on the wall behind him when u first enter. This unexpected update was very cool. I wasn't able to take pictures but definitly will next time. Has anyone else heard anything about this or seen it?

Can confirm this. I thought so too, when I went on the ride on New Year's Day. I have footage to prove this (not great footage, coz the ride was giving us a good shaking!). I wasn't sure if it was just me coz I'm not exactly a frequent visitor of Disneyland. I can definitely say that the lighting effect was very nice and looked heaps better than last time!!

I also noticed this time around, that the mummies were actually working. Last time, they weren't.

Hey found some news on the Disney Parks blog RE: 15th Anniversary of the Temple of the Forbidden Eye.

http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2010/04/youll-dig-this/

Seems new merchandise is on the way, apparently at the end of this month although, the anniversary was on the 3rd of March (last month!). In any case, am envious that the new Mickey Indy shirt wasn't avaliable when I was there at Christmas time, I would have bought it!

Nice looking shirts. Now I wish they would shut it down for an extensive refurb; a lot needs to be fixed. Hell, I don't think the doors to the Gates of Doom have worked properly in years. Needs more smoke too.

A lot of these theme parks are just not very good at keeping up with their attractions. Both Indy attractions - the ride and the stunt show - need some reworking. The stunt show still works, but it's getting old and tired. It's the same exact stunts, the same gags...just not as fun anymore; and I've always had a soft spot for the stunt show, since that's where I was first introduced to Indiana Jones.

Anyway, back on topic. This ride needs some refurbishing.

I'm heading to Orlando Disney in June. Where are the Indy rides and attractions? Also, are there any Star Wars sights to be seen there as well? Please help. Thanks. (y)

The "Hollywood Studios" park in Orlando is where the Indy stunt show is. There's also a couple of small Indy themed shops nearby where you can buy merchandise. Very close to that is the Star Wars ride, Star Tours.

While you're in that park, check out MuppetVision 3D. Easily the most under-rated attraction there.

Last summer I went to the Disneyland in Paris and they had an Indy ride "Indiana Jones et le temple du peril". It was really cool because it was set up like the mine cart chase and while waiting in line you could look at the different tents (Indy's, I think one was a Nazi tent). There was one little loop but it was more like a fast mini rollercoaster.

Does that one still run backwards or did they change it? It's been years since I went there, so it's probably been back to normal a long time.

We were there for three days or so, and we saved this for last. Actually, we were too scared to go, but we decided we had to try it, so we went towards the line, thinking we could always turn back, then it turned out there was no line whatsoever, so we reached the cart with everybody seated and only the last two places free and it was like they were waiting for us, so we went ahead and climbed aboard. As I said it went backwards, and being in the last seats there was absolutely nothing in front of us in the loops, it was scary as hell and I kept my eyes closed almost the entire way.

I was there in late April 2008 (just a month before Indy 4) and it was going forwards. Apart from the chance to see the detail at the top of the temple, it was a lame ride.:(

P.S. Nice top pic, acsgrlie. I did not see the fedora & whip while I was there.:whip:

My wife and I went to Disney to ride Temple of the Forbidden Eye shortly after it opened. I was so psyched I wore half of my Indy gear. Pants, shirt, hat -- don't think I did the bag or jacket, and certainly not the whip. All day people thought I worked at Disney and was on a break. Funny.

Also funny, when we finally got on the ride, it turned out I sat in the driver's seat. Again, everyone else on the ride thought it was a setup. They were probably waiting for me to jump off and shoot someone or perform some sort of stunt. Hope they weren't too disappointed.

It hasn't run backwards since '04. Which kind of sucks, because the ride, as it was, is better backwards. There's plenty of land in and around the DLRP, and Le Temple du Péril was shoehorned into a teeny footprint. More work should have been done to at least bring it close to the two temples -- Crystal Skull & Forbidden Eye.

As it stands, the version at Tokyo DisneySea is better, much better.

Since we were talking about Temple of the Forbidden Eye on this thread, I thought I would share some things that have been lost in the sixteen years since the ride debuted.

In the original plans, the jeep scrum through the temple that some us know and love was supposed to be 1/3 of a "Lost Expedition" area centered around the exploits of Indiana Jones! Yes, you read that correctly.

<img border='0' src='http://www.theneverlandfiles.com/tnf/images/indianajonesandthelostexpedition1.jpg' style='border-color: #CC6600' width='900'></imq>

In addition to the jeep adventure we were also supposed to have a mine car chase lifted right out Temple of Doom! Intrepid explorers would work their way around The Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse (Now Tarzan's Treehouse) and decide whether to head up to the mining station or down to the jeep adventure! Down by the river explorers on the World Famous Jungle Cruise would pass through a massive temple complex while navigating a series of traps Dr. Jones had already deactivated! As an added bonus, the Disneyland Railroad would also pass through giving guests a glimpse into the adventure!

<img border='0' src='http://www.theneverlandfiles.com/tnf/images/indianajonesandthelostexpedition2.jpg' style='border-color: #CC6600' width='900'></imq>

Unfortunately, Splash Mountain was greenlit first. It would take another six years before Temple of the Forbidden Eye would make its debut in Disneyland. While highly impressive -- the best Disney's ever done -- it wasn't nearly as ambitious as "The Lost Expedition" would have been!

<img border='0' src='http://www.theneverlandfiles.com/tnf/images/indianajonesandthelostexpedition6.jpg' style='border-color: #CC6600' width='900'></imq>

So why bring it up now? Well, rumor has it that Lasseter has been looking over these old plans and designs for future viability! Given space requirements, it might no longer fit in Disneyland, but there's a chance Disneyland Resort Paris or the forthcoming Shanghai Disneyland could have this ultimate e-ticket attraction built for them!

Stop in at the Neverland Files to see some additional artwork, and at Jim Hill's site for those of who who'd like to see how it would all come together.

---

For 'ish and giggles check out this collection of pictures from the ride's 10th Anniversary in 2005! You would think that the man who created the character and the company that gave us the ride could at least dress Indy properly!

Thanks, Le Saboteur!

*sigh* Staring at Google Maps, there really is no place to slip an additional coaster-style attraction into Disneyland's Adventureland without getting fairly creative. Just south of the Jungle Cruise, east of the Forbidden Eye building, there's dead space/guest services that could be consolidated into enough room for an attraction if the monorail line was moved slightly south.

If Soarin' over California weren't so darn popular you could whisk guests through an underground tunnel to that attraction footprint.

Alternately, once the Cars ride is open the huge expanse taken up by Autopia could be repurposed. I know, that's blasphemy to consider such major changes to the DL, but IMHO Autopia needs a serious overhaul anyway - electric cars at the very least! If Cars is done well I think it's redundant, and doesn't fit into whatever theme is eventually settled on for Tomorrowland (retro-future, Verne-esque steampunk, ... just pick something!). That's on the opposite side of the park from Adventureland, though, so it doesn't help.

My wife points out that housing prices in the area are on the floor, so Disney should just pick up the neighborhood to the West of the DL Hotel and turn that into parking, relocating the existing parking structures. (Of course, being from San Francisco, we look at the maps and question the need for any above-ground parking!)
