Naaah maaate, I'm English and I lived in Sydney for a few years recently so it's based on experience.
Do they still teach the Nutbush City Limits dance at school?
Your experience is based solely on Sydney. Western or Southern suburbs, I'm guessing. Which isn't a fair assessment of Australia. I've lived out there only last year. I don't think you're completely wrong, however I think your assessment depends on what part of Australian culture you talking.
I've lived in 5 different Australian cities. And if the culture was still '86, ask any kid and see if they know anything about 80s culture. Chances are, they don't. They're all obsessed with facebook, iphones and even anime. Some don't even know what Indy is, apart from "nuke the fridge."
As for Nutbush, they certainly didn't teach it to my brother and he is currently in school. I'm well out of school- only time I've ever seen the Nutbush was at extended family parties for the campy-ness of it- And I went to nine schools.
The only thing I'll give you points for for '86 culture, is Australian film and television, as they have yet to evolve to the kind of country Australia's become and becoming. They still have folk believing that the "ocker" spirit is still alive, nation wide. And it isn't. You just have to look at Western Sydney for that. Ocker only exists in places more isolated like Cairns, Townsville or Dubbo. And people still call, European Australians, "wog". Something that I don't exactly appreciate being called.
Then there's the lack of success in the Film & tv business with people who are of any ethnic background apart from White Anglo-Saxon Australia, certainly shows the underlying racism that still abounds here and that in itself is more 70s than anything. And so many talented people then flock over to LA or Britain and become successful there.
I think I've made my point here. Now, back on track to what this thread's really about.
