Indy-Cast Trivia II

As you may have expected the opening of Temple of Doom presented Steven Spielberg with a great opportunity. He explains that he had always been a frustrated musical director and that "You can't help doffing your cap at Busby Berkley whenever you have a line of dancing girls with beautiful legs in sequin costumes in a kind of syncopated rhythm...it's impossible...". He would employ an effect as old as film itself when he simply ran the dancer's split in reverse to get them back on their feet.

The difficult half of the question regards the snakes guarding the Ark. While panning over the floor of the Well of Souls you can still see it, snakes tied head to tail like linked sausages being pulled along in one of the most low tech effects that you'll ever see. Pay special attention to the unusual movements of the snake moving to the torch Indy drops.

Even though he wasn't a fan of the not so special effect, the brief moment made the cut as Spielberg describes the fake snakes as June Taylor dancers on a string in Star Wars Insider 54, the Double sided Raiders Anniversary Issue.

Northern Illinois University archeology professor Winifred Creamer said "Indiana Jones is the worst thing to happen to archeology and walks a fine line between an archaeologist and professional looter." Who shares her opinion in each film?

Belloq has obviously spread this ugly rumour to the Hovitos and later objects to Indy giving mercenaries a bad name.
Major Eaton diplomatically questions and answers: "how does one say it? Obtainer of rare antiquities"
Indy himself describes the Shankara Stones as Fortune and Glory.
Willie accusingly asks Indy his motive for recovering the Shankara Stones and proposes Fortune and Glory which shorty confirms.
Chatter Lal mentions vicious rumours, Honduras and the Sultan of Madagascar's desire to cut off Indy's misunderstanding.
The small town Utah Sheriff promises the rightful owner [of the Cross of Coronado] wouldn't press charges if [Indy]gave it back.
Panama Hat declares: "this is the second time I've had to reclaim my property." and
Marion tells Mutt that Indy is some kind of grave robber and Indy nearly proves it over a Conquistador's knife.

Not great company, but let's hope Dr. Creamer's interpretations of past cultures are more insightful than her take on our pulp hero. The darkest movie shows Indy's adult motives begin to evolve from selfish to selfless. In her defence, Willie didn't see it either when she taunts, "you could have kept it, ...it would have given you your fortune and glory."

The London Symphony Orchestra has a long association with John Williams and his Music. Although they only performed John Williams' Score for Raiders of the Lost Ark, the LSO has recorded some of John Williams post Raiders Indy themes.

What album and which song(s) can you hear the "Brittish Brass" ride with Indy once again?

What album and which song(s) can you hear the "Brittish Brass" ride with Indy once again?
John Williams Greatest Action Hits: A Tribute by The London Symphony Orchestra has some Gems and Shining moments but some of the arrangements are the dirt you must sift through to get to them. To hear the experience and cohesive skill of these musicians and their instruments deliver Temple of Doom themes is a marked difference from the hired guns used on previous releases. You can feel the absence of John Williams in the same manner you can feel the absence of Roger Waters from Pink Floyd...direction. I won't offer the obligatory Lennon McCartney metaphor.

Indy-Cast Trivia XV

The term McGuffin coined by famed director Alfred Hitchcock was adopted by Spielberg and Lucas to describe the central motivation for each film, The Ark, The Stones, The Grail and The Skull. Which other Hitchcock influence is emulated in The Temple of Doom? Hint: Many refer to it as his Cinematic Signature.

Many of Hitchcock's films include cameo appearances by Hitchcock
himself: he would be seen for a brief moment in a wheelchair in an
airport, or as a recurring theme he would carry a musical instrument.
In Lifeboat, a feature film set entirely on, you guessed it, a
lifeboat, Hitchcock appears in the before and after photos of a
newspaper advertisement for weight loss product Reduco Obesity Slayer.
In Temple of Doom Spielberg, Lucas, Marshall and even Harrison Ford's
Weight Trainer Jake Steinfeld appear as extras at the airport in
Shanghai.

Indy-Cast Trivia XVI

Nominated for four Oscars,
winner of a Cleo for advertising and design excellence,
sold a screenplay in the 70's described as "the best un-made film in Hollywood"; which wasn't produced until 1992,
acted as Jack Nicholson's psychiatrist,
wrote TWO of the top grossing films that everyone listening has seen,
produced a role for a dead Kevin Costner
Who is this unsung hero and what was his contribution to Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?

Your Lucky Numbers 397

After the death of Leigh Brackett, he completed the screenplay for The Empire Strikes Back, wrote the screenplay for Raiders and then, Return of the Jedi.

The Body Guard, written for Dianna Ross in the 70's was eventually made with Whitney Huston, but it was The Big Chill that put Kevin Costner in a casket. Despite the film title, in a role even an imaginative writer couldn't escaped unscathed, he couldn't crack Jack's psyche in As Good as it Gets.

But Lawrence Kasdan was tapped by David Koepp for the banter and Indy and Marion's rapport in Crystal Skull.

George Lucas characterized his creations in a recent interview as such:
I'm the father; [the films], that's my work. Then we have the licensing group, which does the games, toys and books, and all that other stuff. I call that the son - and the son does pretty much what he wants." He laughs. "Once in a while, they ask a question like 'Can we kill off Yoda?', things like that, but it's very loose. "Then we have the third group, the holy ghost, which is the bloggers and fans. They have created their own world. I worry about the father's world. The son and holy ghost can go their own way."

With this firmly in mind, please consider the following:

Indy barters with Marcus for tickets to Marrakesh because he believes it is the only place Belloq can sell the Chachapoyan Fertility Idol, and his best chance at recovering it. In the expanded universe material he does with the help of Sallah, but what is the ultimate fate of the True Idol as filmed for Raiders?

As written: [Belloq] makes it clear that he did not escape with the idol.

After Belloq tells Indy he will hand the Ark over to the Fuhrer when he is finished with it, the next bit of dialogue is edited from the film.

Indy asks: Tell me, did you get away with the idol?
and Belloq tells him: I was lucky to get away with my life. The Hovitos proved quite narrow-minded about the whole matter.

I guess speaking Hovitos just isn't enough, or necessary!

Indy-Cast Trivia XVIII

Indy has been called a pig in at least two of his cinematic outings.
Which films and which characters have such contempt for Indy?

At the submarine base In Raiders, while Indy is discovering his acquired uniform is too small, the Nazi with the right build discusses his future saying he might not want to model his look after swine.

As if whipping him wasn't enough, while tied to the "Rock of Indoctrination" in Temple of Doom, Mola ram motivates Pat Roach goading him to "spill the hog's blood."

Indy-Cast Trivia XIX

From October 08

While the last two Indy films have explored the relationships of Indy
and his father and son, Crystal Skull is where Steven Spielberg pays
tribute to his own patriarch and progeny. Where and How?

1Spielberg's father Arnie was inspiration for the name of the Diner which is the setting 6for the Greasers/Jock/KGB/College Professor/Cat fight/Brawl in Crystal Skull. Joe 1College's stand-up girl who belts Mutt, and does a fair impression of her mother from 1Temple of Doom is Spielberg's daughter Sasha.

Indy Trivia XX

Ed mentioned Top Secret, a great comedy movie and a tribute to spy/50's
teen/adventure films, (Crystal Skull anyone?) which features a cast member from Raiders. As a member of the crew of the Bantu Wind he has couple of lines but shamefully is not listed in the credits. What is the name of the actor and the character he plays in both films.

Eddie Tagoe is credited as the "Messenger Pirate" sent by Captain Katanga to find Indy, and ultimately does, pointing him out climbing on to the German Sub. In Top Secret he plays a cigar chewing sub machine gun toting french resistance member named, of all things, Chocolat Mousse.

Indy Trivia XXI

What element did Ridley Scott reluctantly drop for his Film Noir: Blade Runner specifically because of Raiders of the Lost Ark?

A little behind your episode featuring the iconographic Fedora, Ridley
Scott told NPR's All Things Considered that he originally wanted Blade
Runner Rick Deckard to sport typical detective film noir wear: a
fedora, trench coat and gun. He decided against the hat once he saw
Indiana Jones' iconic wear in Raiders of the Lost Ark, shot directly
before Blade Runner.

Indy Trivia XXII

An anachronism is anything that is temporally incongruous in the time period it has been placed in?that is, it appears sufficiently out of place as to be peculiar, incomprehensible or impossible. Pedro promised he wouldn't go into the merits of things that didn't appear on screen, which inspires this question: Which TWO locations presented the crew with anachronisms, television aerials that were decidedly NOT at home in the late 30's and how were the issues resolved?
