While I'm not keen on some of the updates/changes/whatever, it would be a shame if this ends up being a straight to video release,

Unfortunately a theatrical release didn't happen Stateside, but I did see it on the shelf at my local Target for the princely sum of ten bucks! Yes, regular price. I didn't pick it up yet, but I'll probably snag a copy this coming weekend.

Re-posted for its sheer amazing-ness. My only quibble is that everything appears a bit too clean & fresh (riverboat included). This guy's kit could use some more weathering, dirt & moisture stains!

No image of Lord Greystoke seems to have found its way on the 'net, but while perusing these few behind the scenes images popped up. Dig the costume and make-up work!

If not, then I wouldn't be surprised if Jane is portrayed as a wise-crackin', gun-totin', martial arts expert.

Probably not in this version the way it's shaping up, but maybe in Netflix's new series! ;)

Not to be outdone, however, Netflix aims to pad out their animated offerings with a Tarzan animated series that's supposed to debut in late 2016! Currently titled Tarzan & Jane this series is aimed at older kids; the type of kids who might have enjoyed Where on Earth is Carmen San Diego

Netflix said:
"Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan and Jane” (second half of 2016): In modern-day remake of the classic characters, 16-year-old Tarzan returns from the African jungle to a London boarding school where he meets Jane, who helps him solve environmental injustice, crimes and mysteries. The eight-episode season comes from 41 Entertainment and executive producer Avi Arad (which are also developing “Kong – King of the Apes” original series and feature-length film for Netflix) with animation from ARC Prods.

Yes, but Kong seems to have bailed on The Raven, entirely. He hasn't posted for over 2.5 months.:(

I also came across a DVD of that new CG Tarzan movie on the shelf in Austria last December (or in Rome in May) but didn't buy it. Will have to watch it first but it looks much more interesting than that upcoming Netflix show.(n)

As stated elsewhere: The upkeep could have saved a lot of heartbreak and hassle by leaving the whole thing offline or making it all read only save for the circle jerk that is "What's Harry Doing Right Now?!!111"

I saw that and opted not to mention it, because I'm not convinced that's Alexander Johan Hjalmar Skarsgård. Something about the body type seems off, but it's certainly possible. I'm currently inclined to think that the gentleman in question is a stand-in or a stunt double. Good look at the most minimal costume ever though!

I'll be waiting for the first official promo pictures when it comes to Tarzan.

re: elephants

Real elephants are always exciting! The part that really intrigues me is where was that image was shot? (I purposefully avoided doing the due diligence in translating the site, because I wanted to avoid learning anything more.) I'd like to see a wider shot, because part me thinks some actual African location shooting was done. IMDB only lists locations in the UK, but I hope not.

I had my reservations as well. The actor looks nothing like a trad military officer; a scout maybe, but definitely not rank and file. After thinking it over for a while, I was considering that he could be a member of the local constabulary or some kind of... slaver(?). The ropes at his waist look like they could be a type of restraint; an early version of the zip tie. He's also dressed very much like the gentlemen accompanying <s>Paul Freeman</s> Christoph Waltz on the riverboat.

We also see... the Leopard Society?! The usage of white kaolin is a nice touch; they've done some research. The Alunda were quite well known for covering themselves with a mixture of ash and kaolin.

I ended up buying it. It was only ten bucks. If it sucks I won't be too out of sorts. At least the visuals look pretty good. Not good enough to actually have sat down and watch it yet, but I will. Scout's honor!

That said, I have often considered in establishing a pulp book club here so people can familiarize themselves with the actual stories that started the trend, but a majority of the books are long out of print, so they'd be difficult to come across. Tarzan, however, is readily available in your local bookstore. If anybody is interested, pick up a copy. We'll start reading in, say, a week?

This is still open for anybody who is interested.

Now we wait... for nearly two years. Why? Because principle photography has wrapped according to this Facebook page.

Yes, but as you know there's a lot work to be done on the back end of the $180-million(!!) wannabe franchise in the making. Now following the potential $150-million disaster that is Pan and the lesser disasters of Jupiter Ascending and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (which might actually turn a small profit), there is growing concern of Warner Bros. upcoming slate of releases.

The Hollywood Reporter said:
Sources say early test screenings of Tarzan, an adventure starring Alexander Skarsgard of HBO's True Blood as the vine-swinger and Margot Robbie as Jane, did not go well. But studio sources say the film is not finished and it's routine for movies to be revised and improved. And a Warners insider notes that both Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood have gone into preproduction on projects before their previous film is finished, though none has been as expensive, complicated or challenged as Tarzan appears to be.

Not the kind of info I hoped to be reading about this far out from it's release date, but this is a perfect example of why you don't arbitrarily assign release dates to movies until they're in the can.

The Hollywood Reporter said:
In that context, especially, the Tarzan situation has raised eyebrows. Veteran producers and executives not involved with the project say they can't remember a studio pulling a director off one unfinished big-budget live-action movie to start another. But Beasts ? at least as expensive as Tarzan and probably more so ? has to make its own release date in November 2016.

Not looking good for Tarzan at all. Heard Warner lost a ton of money on 'Pan' and so now Tarzan is seen as risky.

As to the Africa question:

Africa itself is a main character in the movie, according to Yates, who tapped Potter collaborator Stuart Craig to design his Legend of Tarzan sets. To capture the jungle flavor, two hangars at an old English airplane factory were transformed into soundstages 200 yards long with real trees, vegetation, running water and mountainous areas. Green screen and CGI were used, as well as natural elements photographed in Gabon to add richness to the fully realized environment.

Meanwhile the first poster has been released...

(y)

It's not a great poster by any stretch, but it's infinitely better than the typical disembodied heads that usually adorn posters these days. I really like the symmetry between man & beast aping (if you'll pardon the pun) the synopsis of Lord Greystoke peeling away his acquired gentility to again reveal the beast underneath. I look forward to more, but if Warner Bros. don't start tapping some of the really, really good Tarzan artists out there then it's a missed opportunity.

I thought they might wait until after the first of the year to release a trailer, but perhaps wanting to nip any further negative buzz in the rear have released a really, really nice trailer. With apes! Lots of apes!

Dig it!

I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised by the trailer, the movie looks really entertaining, despite the obvious cgi parts, the look and feel of it seems interesting.

One of the shots actually reminded me of Indy.

At least somebody is!

I was tickled pink as the saying goes. I was particularly pleased with the look of the Mangani, and who I have to assume at this point is Kerchak. (In a traditional Tarzan timeline, he'd be dead by this point, but I'm drawing a blank on the other prominent members of the tribe.)

The CGI seems to be implemented quite well so far, and will hopefully be used to reinforce the trad VFX in deceiving the eye rather than lying to it.

At this particularly early stage I am quite impressed with how Tarzan moves through the jungle.

Onward to Summer!

Speaking of Congo, I sincerely hope they get the Stan Winston Studio to do real ape suits again. Amy was an absolute gem, and they only improved with the Burton Apes remake and Instinct.

That's one hope dashed. The producers went with the cheaper motion capture and CGI route. If it wasn't perfectly clear from the trailer, a handful of behind the scenes snaps of mocap actor Ace Ruele have found their way online.

Oh you're welcome, it's a pleasure to update the thread. I love the myth of Tarzan, and thanks for the embedded trailer, I didn't remember how to do it. (y)

Both trailers are terrific, about this one I liked the introduction with Tarzan's parents, and also tell me if at the 0:11 mark that shot doesn't remind you of Indy? It does to me! :whip:

Sure, but it also reminds of several other movies including Jurassic Park*.

* - I have absolutely zero interest in the further adventures of Dr. Jones.

I've watched this quite a few times over the past couple of days, and I give it full marks. Despite the obvious CGI (and useless at times) everything feels and looks top notch. The jungle looks phenomenal. Sure, most of it was filmed on a soundstage in England, but the on-location shooting they did in Gabon meshes quite well. It's all quite dark and foreboding; the way a untamed jungle should be. And as a Burroughs and Tarzan fan, this is closer in both tone and spirit to anything Hollywood has put over the last century. Well, except maybe the origin aspects of Greystoke. Those are par excellence.

?You may not like who you were?.you may have enemies there, but you need to go home!?

This is an interesting -- and fabulously delivered by Mr. Hurt -- bit of dialogue. When combined with the clearly distressed shot of Jane and Tarzan in front of the tree, I can't help think that Lord Greystoke is... reluctant to return to Africa. The fact that Africa is referred to as 'home' is also interesting. Has Tarzan fully acclimated to the Victorian World and become John Clayton, Viscount Greystoke? Has he retained an undercurrent of the, say, primal that others recognize, but he can't? What is clear though is that he's not chomping at the bit to go back.

Sam Jackson is still something of an unknown in terms of the movie, but I am liking what I see so far. The mustache is a great touch. Read more here.

No word on the Mangani unfortunately. Most of the clear images are quite convincing lowland/mountain gorillas, but there are a couple of really quick shots at the very end of the trailer that look very non-gorilla like. You'll need to pause the trailer at just the right time, but I think they look remarkably similar to how Burroughs described them in Tarzan of the Apes.

Edgar Rice Burroughs said:
The tribe of anthropoids over which Kerchak ruled with an iron hand and bared fangs, numbered some six or eight families, each family consisting of an adult male with his females and their young, numbering in all some sixty or seventy apes. Kala . . . was large and powerful?a splendid, clean-limbed animal, with a round, high forehead, which denoted more intelligence than most of her kind possessed. So, also, she had a great capacity for mother love and mother sorrow. But she was still an ape, a huge, fierce, terrible beast of a species closely allied to the gorilla, yet more intelligent; which, with the strength of their cousin, made her kind the most fearsome of those awe-inspiring progenitors of man.

Hopefully this'll become clearer during the movie!

For any members in the southern half of California, there's a panel during next week's WonderCon. It might be the next chance to find out more information.

I remember reading several of the classic ERB Tarzan novels years ago.

And, as a kid, I enjoyed seeing the film "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes" in the theater back in 1984, since it was a fairly accurate adaptation of the original novel. I remember being disappointed that they never followed this first film up with any sequels - since there were a plethora of ERB Tarzan novels.

Interesting that they're making another Tarzan film. As we saw with Greystoke, it looks like this new film will be an adaptation of the ERB novel If so, sounds good to me.
