Hi All

I was looking thru the Indiana Jones Magazines the other day and came across a pic of Indy in a deep sea divers suit and was intrigued by the picture.
After doing some more searching I came across Indiana Jones and the Shrine of the Sea Devil comics and saw that Indy used a deep sea suit, After seeing the pictures I decided that I would give this a go as it is such a different look for Indy.

Once I put the whole figure and base to together to see what it would like I pulled everything apart and painted and weatherd it using Vallejo, Games Workshop paints and pastels.

RECIPE

1: Indiana Jones - Indy's body and head are from Sideshow Toys, the gloves are from a Dragon the divers helmet, The diving suit, shoulder plate and metal souls and weight blocks are from the old GI JOE figures.
The lead weight blocks are actually plastic I just repainted them to look like lead, The harness is made of leather and 1/6 scale buckles.

The knife and sheath are from Dragon and the boots souls are real lead weights from the GI Goe figure and the ankle braces are made from left over material and 1/6 scale buckles.
The diving helmet was missing the handle so I used some 1/72 scale pieces from the bits box to make one, The rope is from also from the bits box.

2: Base - The base is from the hardware shop from the craft section and the ships decking was done by using balsa wood and then I scribed the blank sections into it. The crate was made from scraps of balsa wood which I got from my scrap box and was built I scribed panels into it.

He looks excellent, Ron!

I'll have to look through my old Action Man/GI Joe collection to see what I have of that old diving suit. I remember that the lead weights suffered from lead rot and had grown blue crustaceans!

just out of curiosity les, does the ravenwood house any of hemble's creations?(y)

The question is not 'does' -- but rather -- 'how many?' !

We are proud to have 2 on display and I know for certain we will be adding more in the future :)

It would be quite the shame if you didn't, as they are a great landmark in indy memorablia history:hat:

Hi All

Guys thanks again for the feedback and replies there always appreciated. Yeah Les has the Map Room Indy with nazi flag and mystery of the blues Indy.

It was a great honor that he asked to acquire a few of my figures as I know that they will be well looked after in the musuem. And ED Dolista (Indy Cast) has my TOD single indy figure which got plug and pick in Ed's local news paper over here in OZ.

lao che & sons I am picking up the body for the stop motion Indy and will take pics tonight and show them in this section http://raven.theraider.net/showthread.php?t=19981

I just dug out my Indy DVD comic collection:

IndySeaDevil_09.jpg

I had a hunt for my old Action Man deep sea diver parts, but can't find the helmet or suit. A few years back I ebayed my Action Man collection, but have since been keeping everything I've been finding, and it's hard to remember what I have now, in relation to what I used to have! The helmet and collar were one of the better pieces, and I wish I hadn't been so eager to sell everything.

Hi All

lao che & sons - sorry mate I forgot to mention before this figure won't be in the film. I have started getting parts for my indy figure and have pics up, I will show further figures as the progress.

I have also added over on the other section the small WIP of the mayan temple's.

Montana Smith - I actually like the colour of the dive suit the pic I have makes it look white to off bone.

Ron, the suit on your figure looks perfect. It's that classic colour, so I don't know why in the comic they coloured it beige-brown. But then, all the colours in that story are a bit off - like the man holding the helmet, I presume he's supposed to be wearing a white jacket and cap. It could be to emphasize the muted light. They even gave Indy brass over shoes, instead of lead.

HI All

Montana Smith - Yeah your right mate I've been lookng at some photos on google and even the old black and white pics show it's white.

And I finally got some indy comics and there's one where indy's fedora is a yellow colour.

Haha! I remember some of the old Marvel Indy comics had some garish colours. Comic book colourists really ought to be checked for colour blindness before they're given work!

The remarkable thing about the old Action Man and GI Joe pieces was that they put quite a bit of effort into accuracy, especially considering that outfits like the deep sea diving suit were first made in the late '60s. As a child I always respected Action Man as a quality toy (he was always one of my favourite toys, along with Britains plastic farm and zoo animals - I'm still collecting the old Britains plastics, and now also keeping any Action Man I find!)

Ron, he looks GREAT! As usual, an outstandly superb job! I absolutely love when you do pieces that are not from the films and "Sea Devil" is one of my favourite Indy comics. Some other customizers have done nice versions of this outfit for the small figures but yours takes it to a whole new level. He also wore a diving suit in the "Fate of Atlantis" comic. (Indy dove in a Marvel tale, too, but with no suit.)

Wow, you're unlocking old memories for me as I had a G.I. Joe diving helmet (for the original, big figures not the little ones from the early '80s). Several years ago, I saw an amazing book with photos of all the old G.I. Joe toys including the boxes. How I'm kicking myself now for not buying it because I never saw it again and have no idea what the book was called!:(

Good memories! Before I sold off my collection (and now wishing I hadn't) I bought a book called Action Man: The Real Story 1966-1996, by Kevin King (Cairo Cafe Publications). I still have it, as it's a great resource. It's a big, glossy 296 page catalogue with photos of the outfits on loose figures, with descriptions and all sorts of information.

I think the release of all the 40th Anniversary sets (which seem to reproduce just about everything that was released) has thrown the Action Man / GI Joe collecting world into turmoil, as I believe that not all the later stuff is dated or marked as such.

I could hazard a guess, Stoo, that one of your favourite outfits would have been The Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman. ;)

Seeing Ron's diving Indy, I really want to pick up the helmet and collar pieces again.

So, hemble's diorama of Indy from "Mystery of the Blues" is now part of Les David's Ravenwood Museum? (www.throwmetheidol.com) His masterpiece has a good home.:)

Since c.1982, models & action figures have not been within my realm of collecting but photos/videos of things I had as a kid are enough to satiate my nostalgic memories. I've heard of Action Man but am more familiar with Action Jackson by MEGO who (across the pond from the UK) was G.I. Joe's competitor before Big Jim came along. I wouldn't mind having that G.I. Joe book, though...

Whatever gave you that idea?:p In the New Acquistions thread you posted a picture of Dovchenko but I'm more interested in the figure to the left of the photo...

@RON: Have you ever considered doing a custom of another character from the films besides Indy? Using the figure in question, it might be rather easy to create a large version of Capt. Blumburtt in his tropical kit. Below is a mini-example from the excellent customizer, Jr.Jones:

I don't want to hijack Ron's thread, so I'll be brief.

Action Man was really the UK brand name for GI Joe, but made under license by Palitoy (though I used to have some 1964 Canadian GI Joes as well).

I think Action Jackson and Big Jim were the shorter figures that were made during the oil crisis in the 1970s.

The figure to the left in the photo above is Dragon in Dreams' John Colman, British Expeditionary Force, 1940. His kit is largely First World War, and he came with the metal Vickers MG:

DSCN3724.jpg

That picture was taken soon after I put him together, before his kit got sorted out and tightened up. He has a selection of Guards badges and shoulder ranks to apply, but I haven't gotten around to doing them.
