Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons

Growing up reading the Havoc in Heaven animated movie storybook, I always knew the story of the Monkey King was nuts. It's a great relief to discover someone on the largest continent agrees. Stephen Chow (Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle) has made what could be the first installment in a series of adaptions of the classic 1592 Chinese novel. It made $200 million in China and now it's streaming on Netflix. Unlike Forbidden Kingdom which was terribly formulaic for a western audience, this adaptation never slows down.

Plus you finally get to see the golden hooped rod and magical mirror which could have appeared in Indy 3!

Have you had a chance to check this out? If not, you definitely should. Stephen Chow* is one of the great comedic talents working today. Journey to the West is still streaming on Netflix if you're so inclined.

* - Do yourself a favor and avoid the Miramax release of Shaolin Soccer; they butchered it. Find a copy of the international or original cut. See God of Cookery too.

Why? Because after many rumors, Journey to the West 2: Demon Chapter is hitting theatres in time for Chinese New Year! Except this time Chow has handed over directoral duties to Tsui Hark (The Taking of Tiger Mountain, Time & Tide)!

Thankfully the trailer doesn't show much, but the posters are promising a world of visual delight!

Definitely agree about Shaolin Soccer, also avoid the Miramax trailer which spoils everything. High hopes for this $63M budget sequel. Stephen Chow was busy making the $550M international hit Mermaid, which inspired a Splash remake-quel(?) with Channing Tatum.

Another trailer-like thing that somebody kindly added English subs too. Just ignore the CNY tomfoolery from TH & SC at the end.

60 years after Havoc in Heaven, here's a new fully animated Monkey King movie, on Netflix. If they want to do the Indy script the next time around, they can no longer claim it's too obscure.
