Blu-ray vs HD DVD

I picked up two oddities on BluRay, neither movie you would expect much from the 'remastering'. They were "Life of Brian" and "Blazing Saddles". But, upon getting them, my God the images were incredible. Gone was all the fading, the tearing of images (particularly in Life of Brian were some scenes were near unwatchably bad in the last remaster).. etc.

These aren't movies where you would LOOK for such things, as they're hardly visual spectacles, but the difference was staggering. BluRay transfers aren't just about going to 'hi-def', but also about the new and restored masters, making a lot of these movies look pristine compared to how you're used to seeing them.

The records have already started for The Dark Knight's Blu-ray disc, a month before the discs are set to arrive. According to Video Business, sources have revealed that Warner Bros. intends to ship 1 million The Dark Knight Blu-ray units for its first week of release.

It is believed that this would be the biggest first-week Blu-ray shipment ever, although Warner Bros. wouldn't comment on their shipping schedule. The Blu-ray format itself has been surging since its format war win over HD DVD. Last March, Casino Royale became the first Blu-ray title to ship over 100,000 units in the first week.

It is believed that this mass The Dark Knight Blu-ray rollout will be used as a trigger for consumers to switch to 1080p.

With the advent of 3-D in theaters, it was only a matter of time before the format came to home video and Blu-ray, and Panasonic is offering a way to make it happen. According to Tech-On, Panasonic has submitted a proposal to the Blu-ray Disc Association to create the standard for Blu-ray to move into the 3-D world.

The format would store these images on BD in a two-channel format, with a separate image for the left eye and right eye, in HD with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. The proposal is to adopt this format as the standard for BD 3-D, to avoid a costly format war like Blu-ray and HD DVD were engaged in.

It seems that the technology for this to happen is already available on BD players, thus avoiding costly upgrades to systems. The system will utilize the two-channel encoding function on BD, and this system will have the second channel store only the data not seen in the first channel, enhancing it by 1.5 times.

I'm going to go out on a limb and get attacked here, but could you guys explain to me what's so great about the Back to the Future movies? The only one I remotely like is the first one; I don't think the others are very good at all.

I mean, I could be grossly missing the importance of the movies, but I don't understand all the love for them. Maybe I was too young to appreciate them when they first came out. Was it one of those it-captured-the-moment-for-teenagers kind of thing?

The first one is a classic. The other two are just OK.

Some argue the same about the Indy movies. It really just boils down to personal taste. I happen to like all three (and all 4 of Jones')

But, alas, we're getting off topic.

I like all 3 as well, but Part I is really the only true classic of the 3 films.

Not sure. I think my Sony player does a have a standard DVD outlet if you want to use it as a regular player. But for the full 1080 capabilities, it has to be connected to a TV with a HDMI cable. If you don't want to open it yet, check its specifications on the web...
