So, what was the turning point for you?

Raiders112390 said:Repeated views and a growing feeling that I didn't have to love the film because it had Indiana Jones in the name. At the time I made this thread, I was 17 and I loved everything with the IJ name on it and we had a lot of very crazy characters here who had hated the film before it even came out. So I figured my own doubts were wrong and I was just giving into what was popular around here and defended it. Sort of like I put blinders on because it was a new Indiana Jones film! But as time's gone by and I've gotten older, I still love Indiana Jones but I can see the film's flaws clearly, there is no brand love or loyalty or sense that I need to defend it blinding me.
I don't truly hate, or truly love the film. It's not the worst film ever to me. I don't feel this movie "raped my childhood" despite Indy being a big part of my childhood; It's not non-canon to me. It's just an utter disappointment in many ways which I feel very ambivalent over, sometimes hating it a lot, other times really just enjoying it the way I would one of The Mummy films: as A mindless, fun adventure film. I have a lot of bittersweet mixed emotions regarding this one.

Darth Vile said:Maybe you have to ask yourself which emotion/feeling is most appropriate given the subject i.e. an Indiana Jones movie... I?d like to think I?m pragmatic about it in that I just see it as a well made (in relative terms) and enjoyable/entertaining action movie? to be ranked higher or lower than its peers e.g. ranked lower than Raiders, TLC, the Star Wars movies, Casino Royale but higher than Iron Man, Sherlock Holmes, Quantom of Solace, POTC etc. etc.
Raiders112390 said:Sherlock Holmes was better. Didn't see any of those others, but it's about on par with POTC.
Montana Smith said:If we're rating the film against others, then I'd say that Iron Man was much more enjoyable, and POTC much more engaging - mainly because of Johnny Depp's portrayal.
Congratulations, Raiders112390! You didn't start a new thread on the subject. Mazeltov!Raiders112390 said:Figured this should be bumped.

Raiders112390, you "can see the film's flaws clearly" but Indy 4 is "perfect overall"? How can Indy 4 be PERFECT if it has recognizable flaws?Raiders112390 said:It is just perfect overall.
3 categories for 4 movies. That's a brilliant sign of a genius.Raiders112390 said:I think the IJ series can be divided into three categories: Fun romps (KOTCS and ToD) and Deep Adventures (LC) and Classics (Raiders).

I honestly think and can tell that the amount of "hate" this film gets is truly not existant. Everyone I know loves every Indiana Jones film and those who I know who went to see it when it was in theaters were all happy about the film, while it was me who took convincing to go a second time by a group of buddies of mine who loved it.
I honestly think there isn't any more hate for this film than any other Indy film. It is exagerrated to make it seem like there is alot of hate for it.
foreverwingnut said:I've quoted this before with friends: the haters seem like so many because angry people have much louder voices than the greater majority who are quietly content. That's why this thread is so cathardic- it gives us of like-minds a place to agree on something without an expected debate.

Good post Montana - I agree with all you say... apart form the Sucker Punch thing.Montana Smith said:Voices of hate are generally louder, and more vigorous.
There's a trend where it's assumed to be 'more cool' to express hate than love: to be outside (and above?) something, than to be confined within it. Yet, I believe a lot of the overblown hate is a kneejerk reaction by those eager to be in the cooler looking club.
I've argued for a long time that you can't 'hate' a movie if there's something you like in it. I speak as I find. I know what I like and I know what I don't like. Also know that it's hard to express a firm positive attitude to something when you expect the reaction to be adverse.
I loved Sucker Punch, but I know a lot of people didn't. So I can understand the way lovers of KOTCS feel. It's the right of every individual to like whatever they want, but the internet is a constant battle for conformity. Obviously it's a battle that can't be won by any side. It's also a fight you can play with and poke fun at!
Yes. Harrison was the one constant positive throughout the film. He was definitely still Indy.
Up until the landing of the fridge the movie was at its best.
I found it intriguing that it's genesis was in the Raiders Story Conference. Of course, I have my own unpopular Indyverse theory based on that.
