Coast Guard band to perform at Garde on Jan. 23
New London - The United States Coast Guard Band will present a concert of music by John Williams on Jan. 23 at 2 p.m.
The matinee at the Garde Arts Center in New London features some of his best known music from the films "Star Wars," "Superman," and "Indiana Jones," as well as fanfares composed for the Olympic Games and his arrangement of the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" for the 2009 Presidential Inauguration.
His theme-driven compositions and melodies for horns and trumpets translate well to the wind ensemble, which has made his music a beloved favorite of Coast Guard Band Director Kenneth Megan and a staple of Coast Guard Band concerts. The band's principal clarinetist, Musician First Class Kelly Hurrell, is featured.
This concert is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.
The Garde Arts Center, at 325 State St., is handicapped-accessible. Handicapped parking is available at Cornish Parking Garage with entrances at 192 Governor Winthrop Blvd. and 70 Union St.
For more information, call the Band's Concert Information Line at (860) 701-6826 or visit www.uscg.mil/band. For information about the Garde, visit www.gardearts.org.
