Deadlock nodded, "That should work. Be back in a minute."
He kept low and circled around toward the back of the newcomer's chopper. Before the rotors even slowed, four Japanese gunmen jumped out and converged on the first helicopter.
"Crap." The mercenary considered taking a shot from where he was, but knew that he was well out of the effective range of his pistol.
Deadlock abandoned stealth and started sprinting.
The thugs tried to open the door of the chopper. But their attempts were frustrated. The girl had locked the door. They shouted furiously and pointed at the door. Inside, the girl had no intentions of complying with their demands. One of the thugs aimed his Uzi at the side of the door. Bullets sparked and ricocheted off the armored skin of the helicopter.
Deadlock continued to close in.
Suddenly, the rotors of the gunmens' helicopter quit. The pilot left the cockpit and approached his four passengers from behind. The gunmen took no notice of him. Without a word, the pilot raised an Uzi of his own.
With a single burst of automatic gunfire, the four thugs lay dead and bleeding in the snow.
The sniper stopped dead in his tracks. He looked back toward where Paden was sheltered.
What the hell?
