Well that is fantastic. I can't even imagine someone getting any satisfaction from winning if he DID cheat, which it appears that he did...

Just spotted the news piece. It was the top sports news even in here for a sec. Isn't that a reason enough to note it out as it hadn't stirred any comments in here yet?

Did I dis Armstrong? Yep, if Lance is clean, he is THE man. All my respect to him.

And I'm not saying that it's Americans only who may cheat. If somebody still remembers the Athens olympics and the case with those two Greek sprinters... sure, they never got nailed dead on but the amount of cover up was too obvious. (And if you go as far back as 2001, you find something dirty with Finns too.)

We've also given sanctions even for less aggressive tone and lesser insults. I understand if you feel upset and PO, but think rationally for a sec why I may have made that comment. Even if Landis' B sample ends up being clean, it still casts a shadow on him... and unfortunately Armstrong as well.

The probem with drugs like EPO for example is that its effects outdate it's presence in the human body. So that's just impossible to detect. I'm not sure what to think about this subject anymore, I didn't watch one minute of the TDF this years even thought I live 10 minutes away from the arrival.

There's a Bike Race in France?

Yes, I am an Ugly American.

For a couple of years here I dutifully opened a thread for the Tour de France -- admittedly each time hoping to be able to gloat a bit about another Armstrong victory.

Now that Lance is out running (and not just running but hanging with hacks), I admit I have barely read a paragraph of Tour coverage.

So for what it's worth -- even though I'm a bit of a biker -- I confess to be a fair weather fan.

with all the junk that race puts US riders through (they still try to drag Lances name down, and what they did to Landis is bunk) it is time to to finish the TdF

GO LANCE

it seems to pop up once a year in the summer, and it is usually centered in France . . .Always ends in the same place as well. I wonder if they have had t-shirts made

yeah 7 vs three . . .Almost dead with cancer vs shot in the back but his brother . . .

Well I guess I am a poor man, and happy to be one! Bring on the Iron City!

Greg, let me sell out anyone I can like Landis, Lamond . . .He was great, but I'll take Lance any day of the year. His tours were amazing. "The Look" was the greatest moment in the Tours history!

Well thats a silly thing to argue about in any case. they both won multiple times. that is quite a feat.

Aparently they are having trouble with drugs this year. not that thats new... maybe the news is just making a bigger deal out of it.

Sure Lemond may have only won 3 times but he won 2 of them while not 100% fit, due to having led pellets in the lining of his heart, his lungs and legs, from the shooting incident that he was 20 minutes away from dying from.

As for selling out a drug cheat. What's wrong with that?

The Tour De France is boring to watch...
Plus we're always a year behind when it comes to drug detection. I guess it can be fun to guess who took the most or who's got the most performant artificial enhancer! ok I'm exagerating... but still!

Funny they still have not proven ANYTHING on Landis . . .
I admit when I raced bikes Lemond was a major inspiration, but Lance is the man, he raced when I did, NO ONE ever came close to matching what Lance did. Please do not make a bigger deal out of Lemonds injury to try to match what Armstrong went through with cancer, 20 golf ball size tumors in his longs, brain, 3 platinum Kimo's, very few people could ever live through what he did, then to go one and wine 7 (count them 7, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, thats right SEVEN) TdF back to back! With a MUCh steeper field of competion that Lemond ever faced. Want to talk about Drug testing, I KNOW Lemond never had to go through what Lance did in drug testing, not to mention the F'in Jerries spitting on Lance, etc. Did you watch his time trials, his mountian stages. Lance was super human. And he was a sportsman, when Ullrich took a spill, he waited to beat him fair and square. And like I said in an old post, "The Look" When Lance started down Ullrich on the climb and BOOM gone . . .WOW almost as cool as the Immaculate Reception!

Look I like Lemond, he is great maybe the third best rider, AFTER lance and big Mig!

roundshort forgets all too quickly. . .

Armstrong's battle with cancer was engineered by the same production team that brought us the moon landings. . . . .

Sic transit gloria mundi.

I know bringing this up might feel like twisting the knife to some folks around, but it's such big news that sooner or later someone was going to open a thread about it w/o searching first.

For a while, I suppose we all believed.

The window for a Marshall/Kennedy produced bio has passed, and now it's time for "Cycle of Lies," the movie. I can remember when this list was full of yellow wristbands...

I don't deny it. It's a blow. But a blow diminished for me by the trainwreck that was Armstong's post-racing personal life. I lost respect for him over his treatment of the women in his life. I'm not rational: I'll forgive an artist whose personal life is a disaster -- but not an athlete like Armstrong. Him being so indifferent to the turmoil he caused really dimmed the glow.

I acknowledge his battle with cancer but I see that now as evidence of his extreme selfishness (I've often felt its the selfish bastards that get to grow old) -- a selfishness that manifested itself in his win-at-all-cost mentality. Well it turns out there was a cost after all.

See 'ya Lance.

I was cycling for sport as early as the eighties, nothing serious, local clubs and saturday morning criterions, but I soon learned cycling as a sport is riddled with drug use at higher levels. Sure Lance got caught, but if the field he beat is also using drugs he still won. I cannot imagine anyone not using something to complete the Tour de France, except maybe the guys who bring up the rear of the pack.

i am not condoning drug use, it's just the extreme level of competition makes it an unspoken requirement.
