Indy My Duct Tape Whip

Hi, guys and gals! This is my first post here.

After seeing the tutorial of how to make a duct tape bullwhip on the internet, I decided to make one of my own for last halloween. To make a long story short, it was crap! I thought there must be a better way to make a more authentic looking whip out of duct tape.

I researched on how real whips are made and applied those techniques on my duct tape whip project.

I made the core out of an old computer electrical cord. For the handle, I wrapped lead over the cord to stiffen it. The strands were made just like the popular duct tape tutorial except that I halved it again; making the strands' witdth around 1/4 inch. I plaited a 4-strand belly over the cord and wrapped it in another layer of duct tape. The overlay is an 8-strand plait. Oh, the whip length is around 5.5ft...

I didn't know how to make a turks head knot so I sorta cheated and just did it freestyle for the butt of the whip and the transition was actually a flat 4-strand braid.

Here's the whip. I made it out of Tan colored duct tape (i wasn't able to find a brown color).

The final whip was heavy and felt real. I'd call this the Ultimate Duct Tape Whip. Too bad I wasn't able to take pictures while I was making it. It's kinda hard to plait and take pictures at the same time. All in all, I guess I put around 8hrs work on this. The plaiting was faster, it was the preparation of the strands that took up most of my time.

I tried cracking it but all I got was few loud snaps instead of a crack. Oh, well... I guess I'm just not good at whip cracking. I have tried to crack a real whip a long time ago and got zilch! Hehe...

To make it look more "real" I used a brown permanent marker to make it dark brown.

Here's the "browned" whip together with a cheap costume fedora I got.

It's a great costume accessory... better looking than the official 6-ft costume whip from rubies.

I wonder if I'm ready to make a real whip... maybe I'll start with nylon.

Leather is too expensive for my 2nd try on making a whip. I think I need to practice more.

I was confident making the duct tape whip cuz I know it wouldn't cost me much if I made a mistake. It's literally dirt cheap. The cost of the duct tape whip probably was just around $5 - $6...

As for making a nylon whip, I'm still looking where I can find a supplier of brown paracord here in the Philippines.
