In raiders of the lost ark, the first gun shot that indy fires in the bar in nepal is at the nazi with the black coat and moustache, the question is...

Why does he fire his gun up in the air? I think it is because the bullet hits the actually machine gun?

Any comments?

Well, I think it's sort of a-case-of Indy just took a random shot rather than taking the time to aim and fire: 'cause, if he'd done that, hed be dead

Or Indy was trying to say "We can do this the easy way... or the hard way.."

Indy wasn't aiming at the Gestapo guy. He fired at the gun because it was becoming hard to see in the haze from the fire...well, that's my reason anyway.
Or it could just be that Indy did aim at the Gestapo and accidentally hit the machine gun, causing it to discharge into the ceiling.

He fired at the Gestapo agent because he saw the shadow of him creeping up, as I recall. But yeah, it looks like he hit the gun.

Looks to me that when Indy shot him the guy jerked upward in pain and surprise. That's why his gun shoots skyward.
