I often wonder if Indy ever had illegal drugs. I know it's been forced on him, from what I've read in the novels. Maybe in college, in his younger years? I dunno, I just have a feeling Indy's tried pot. Or maybe not. What do I know?
I don't know. I don't see Indy as a recreational drug user, to be honest.
He'll drown his sorrows in booze, he'll toast to successes...but I don't conceive of him doing it just for the hell of it. Neither do I see him going out for mind-expanding experiences of a hallucinogenic sort.
Of course, we did see him binging it up with Hemingway, but he was younger then, not quite as hardened. He's not a fun guy, Jones.
Yet, it's easy for me to imagine him as an alcoholic, if his life had taken another turn at a given time in his life.

I agree that alcohol would be his first choice. Maybe the odd sociable cigarette, and when with natives their local drug to help himself into their confidence.
Knowing that Marion needs a truck load of booze before she even begins to get tipsy, the most dangerous adventure Indy will be having in later life will be negotiating his way around the family home without tripping over empty bottles.

Thanks for the informative post, Attila. So perhaps she wasn't aware of the dangers while pregnant. In my opinion, Mutt should have smoked at least once in "Crystal Skull" but it might have sent out the wrong message to the kids.
Did a quick scan of the Marvel comics and they never show her smoking but Marion sure could still slug back those drinks! (See: Issue #6, "Club Nightmare".)
On a related note, if anyone hasn't seen it yet, check out this thread: Marion's cigarettes flat package for a great prop replica of the brand she smokes in "Raiders".

. . . because she chooses to be, of course. Wouldn't want to send the wrong message out to the youngsters.
Wow! Gear is particpating in an actual discussion related to Indiana Jones? Shocking!
What is the point of bringing up her post-"Skull" married life with Indy? It's irrelevant. Since her 1st hubby died, Marion couldn't have been a stay-at-home wife for very long. Nothing much is really known about her lifestlye in the 20 years between "Raiders" and "Skull" so maybe she does indeed still smoke but we just never see her do it in the movie.
As for sending out the wrong message to the kids: What's the problem with stating that? Having Mutt smoke would've increased his 'bad boy' persona but with Spielberg changing guns into flashlights in "E.T." and Lucas blatantly inserting an anti-smoking scene in "Attack of the Clones", it's no surprise that they stayed away from showing Marion (or Mutt) with cigarettes.
The reason I started this topic was simply out of a prediction that Marion would probably not be seen having a few puffs in Indy 4. Sankara was correct back in post #2. Only villains smoke in movies these days...

Seriously? I thought you had the DVDs? It's from the Morocco portion of "Tales of Innocence" but he never puts it in his mouth. Such a great scene!
However, as Indy says in "Scandal of 1920" after George Gershwin offers him a cigarette, "No, thanks. I don't smoke."

Welcome back, Indyologist!
Since Indy isn't afraid to explore, it's possible he tried pot at least once. If he did, a likely time would have been with Sidney Bechet in "Mystery of the Blues". Check out his song, "Viper Mad". (A viper is an old term for a pot-smoker.)
Wrap your chops 'round this stick of tea
Blow this guage and get high with me
Good tea is my weakness
I know it' bad
It sends me gate and I can't wait
I'm viper mad!

Very cool...this is the kind of stuff that I was talking about with regards to Remy.

Morocco 1916, "Tales of Innocence". He doesn't actually smoke it though. It's a prop to help them escape. However to be honest, that's not the part of the film I find a tad disturbing.... In the words of Short Round, "Maybe he like older women".... *Just realised that Stoo already said that! Sorry!*
I would like to note the irony that the thread started about Marion's habits, but somehow went off-track to Indy's and Harrison Ford's habits even.

For what it's worth, I thought his dynamic with Edith Wharton was rather lovely, and far from disturbing.

Oh, not entirely off track. After all, Indy will hold her hand when it's dark, and she's afraid of the boogeyman. And he'll tote her gin bottles out after midnight, so no one'll see. But he will not light her cigarette. And that, as they say, is that.

I recently saw a show on the history of marijuana and it talked about how both Louis Armstrong and Pancho Villa were frequent users. Indy only briefly met Louis Armstrong but spent a couple of weeks with Pancho Villa. If Indy ever tried pot, the 1st time could have been during his time in Mexico.
Pretty sure he did that at some point. Pretty sure he wasn't snorting coke in his college office, though.
He may even have wafted a fair bit of opium in his day.

Well I doubt that Indy would be adverse to it. Let's take stock of what we know. He got fall-down drunk in ROTLA, drank champagne and the blood of Kali in TOD, drank champagne (again) and risked his life to sip from the holy grail itself in LC, then opened the doors of perception in KOTCS (hey, he could have refused or faked it).
