What do those around you think of your Indy obsession?
So pretty much everyone here is a hardcore Indy fan and some of us are in relationships. My question is....... How does your significant other view the series and how do they view your Indy obsession/hobby?
I only watch the series once or twice a year so my girlfriend is okay with that aspect and now that I have pretty much stopped buying toys and collectibles she is better with it. For a while my collection and I caught the evil eye a bit. But now that I'm not buying stuff on ebay daily she okay with it. I think her issue was the time it took to find the items. Funny thing is she got me started collecting again.
Apart from maybe watching the movies once a year, and posting on here, my involvment with all things Indiana Jones is pretty minimal. There was clearly more anticipation/involvment in my household in the run up to KOTCS, when I clearly gravitated towards magazines with Indy on the front, or tried to involve my girlfriend in discussing plot/casting snippets etc. But apart from that... I'm quite reserved on such things. She has much more exposure to my interest in Star Wars... especially as there are 6 movies, multiple video games, Clone War cartoons and the re-release of the movies in 3-D coming up.

I, too, have heard of the mythical creature with the lumpy jumper. However, on the rare occasions I emerge from the darkness of the basement, and walk blinking into the light, I cannot be sure that I've ever seen one for real.

My squeeze does not like my obsession with Indy even though I only collect videos & books. (Thank G_d, I'm not a toy collector!) Everytime she sees The Raven open on my computer she makes a remark. The absolute worst was when my chick stumbled upon the photos of the Indy action figure that I took on our trips to Malta, etc. for the Can we get Indy around the globe? project. She called me a loser for about a week!
She thinks "Raiders" is a good movie but doesn't really care for it one way or the other. I've no idea about her opinion of "Doom" & "Crusade" because she hasn't seen them since they were in the theatre. After "Skull" on opening night, her verdict was that the film was 'GARBAGE'. Thankfully, she has admitted that the Young Indy TV series is 'not bad'.
The sexy ball & chain is also growing increasingly tired of 'Indiana Jonesing' (as she calls it) whenever we travel somewhere. She truly appreciates beauty, history and exoticism and will usually follow whenever I press on an adventurous avenue but she'd really be happier lazing about by the hotel pool/beach or shopping for clothes/shoes. (That said, we did hike to the top of an active volcano together...and did many, other cool things!)
Any females out there whose husbands/boyfriends object to your Indy obsession?
My wife and I met, in part, because of Indiana Jones. We met in 1991 while studying abroad at the American University in Cairo. Wasn't long after LC. She'd read the book before seeing the movie, and I was a diehard fan. Indy was part of why we both wanted to go to Cairo. For her, it was a tossup between American University in Paris, and American University in Cairo. She chose adventure. So we're both fans. However, I'm the geeky collector fan. She just likes the movies. She doesn't mind the obsession, though, which is very nice. And, more importantly, she doesn't get too embarrassed when I go out in public decked out head to toe like Indy. True love.

When I stumbled across this thread, I thought by "they" we might have been discussing what the Beards think of Indiana Jones.
Currently not with anyone, so no idea what reactions would be. In the past, didn't really matter. In fact, it's amazing how many guys haven't even seen an Indiana Jones movie. In terms of friends, meh. They hadn't seen Indy movies either and they had their own obsessions namely anime and manga. And these days, I am a bit more well rounded in my obsessions- Indyfandom is not my only fandom. So guess that makes it easier to accept.

Yes, the thread title is way too vague...

"Anime" & "manga"? My advice would be to stay far, far away from those pimple-poppers.

Obviously, you haven't been to my part of the world. It's not just teens, mate. We're talking people in their 20s and even some bordering on 30.
And though I am not a big anime obsessive, I do collect Sailor Moon stuff and read a couple of mangas.
But back to the discussion at hand, it really depends on the person (if they are fans of something and obsessive with something they may understand better) and the kind of fandom you have for Indy (as in what merch you collect, whether you cosplay at a Con as an Indy character). Personally though with the screen culture we have now especially in Western culture, it's kind of hard for most people to not be a fan of something. Just depends on how deep they delve into it.
My better half is a bit worried by my fandom, although she does refer to me as 'Mickiana' occasionally. Her main criticism, and she is justified in stating it, is that I am not really adventurous at all. My retort is that the movies are my vent for the "adventurer inside me"! But she is the one who met Spielberg and Ford and two accompanying ladies in a hotel swimming pool in Candi while ToD was being filmed! As a fan I am in awe of that.

HA!!!!! funny. great thread idea!!
well i dont have a gf anymore, shes more like a "Sister" to me now (i have 5 "sisters" now. i dont actually have a sister, theyre just close friends that i consider part of my family). but yeah my sisters think im a freak, but we think everyone is a freak of course they are more familiar with my obsession for superheroes.
my Scouting life, however, is different. as i have mentioned once or twice before, my Scouting name is Indiana and the Scouts think its the coolest thing ever sadly, i am not as involved in Scouting anymore due to the fact that i am in college now. but still talk ot all my camp buddies and they still think im a total badass....at least i think...

my wife is pretty disgusted with my indy obsession. she says she can't watch any of the movies anymore ( but i did that to the star wars movies too). but she still is on the look out for indy items for me to add to my collection , so thats not to bad. i'm sure she would rather me not wear my hat just about everyday, or my jacket. but all in all , i think she is a good sport about it .

The use of words and phrases not used worldwide hardly counts as bad English, does it? They are still recognised as being legitimate irrespective.
