Stake Me! A vampire movie masterpiece..?!

The vampire movie has been pretty much done to "death" by this point, right? Even the good vampire flicks are sort of treading over familiar ground, yes? Longtime fans of the undead bloodsuckers have more or less accepted that the sub-genre has become a fairly anemic wasteland, true? Normally I'd have to reluctantly agree with those assertions, but fortunately I caught a really excellent Swedish film this morning called Let the Right One In. Not only does this fantastic little import add a lot of new color to the "vampire flick," but it also turns out to be one of the strangest, stickiest, and (yes) sweetest horror movies I've seen in ten years.

Adapted for the screen (from his own award-winning novel) by John Lindqvist, Let the Right One In is not only a truly excellent horror movie, but it's also a bizarrely touching and personal little movie. It's clear that Lindqvist and director Tomas Alfredson are using vampirism as an accessible metaphor for the myriad problems that face today's teens -- but the movie also feels a lot like a smart horror flick combined with a slice of one of John Hughes' better movies. Whether the film is focusing on the carnage, the puppy-love romance, or a few side-stories with the local townsfolk, Alfredson presents the movie with an appreciable sense of humor, confidence, and sincerity. And while I was initially a bit skeptical about the flick's 114-minute running time, once it had ended I found myself wishing it had been just a little bit longer. Surely that's the sign of a successful movie.

Rarely does a film transcend its genre in the way that Tomas Alfredson’s Let The Right One In does. Based on a novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, this must see Swedish coming of age vampire film is about a twelve year old boy who befriends a girl in the apartment next to him. But little does he know, she’s actually a vampire. Don’t let that scare you away. The movie is not a traditional horror film, it’s a relationship story about an introverted girl who teaches a shy bullied kid how to stand up for himself. It’s sweet in every way you wouldn’t expect. Beautiful and haunting, Let The Right One In is a film you must see.

Has anybody seen this? What are its international release dates?

Simply put, this is a beautiful and amazing achievement in film. It hits on every single emotional level, and there's nothing to even compare it to.

I know that sometimes it's hard to appreciate a movie that's been hyped up to impossible levels, and with both Devin calling it a masterpiece and Tony Timpone telling everyone before my screening that it's not only one of the best horror movies this year, but one of the best of all time, I was worried that it wouldn't live up to my expectations. It did, easily. You will not be able to get this movie out of your head, and I can't recommend it enough.

I watched this movie a couple weeks back online and needless to say I will be buying it on March 10th. It is one of the oddest, most genius, and best movies I have seen.

About the remake though, I was reading that the director is going back to square one from the novel that this movie is based off of. So it's not going to be a remake of the movie per se, but another interpretation of the Swedish novel. Which is alright by me. Apparently they left out important stuff in this version, like how that guy with his face burned off becomes a vampire himself.

I finally found this thread.

After Finn ***** slapped me, chastised me, and told me to that "Sam Earch" is my friend, I finally found this thread.

It was only after I typed in "Swedish Movies" that I found this. Type in the Title of the Movie and you get nothing.........

Anyway though, back to this movie.

It was absolutely FANTASTIC!! I loved it! What a magnificent treatment and take on the Vampire Theme. Never been done before!!

It was a Love Story, it was a Gruesome Horror Movie, it was Heartwarming, it was Disturbing, it was graphically violent, it was erotic, it left you with many questions, and yet somehow very satisfied with the ending.

It's been a week since I saw it and I'm still thinking about it. How many films affect you in that way? For me? Not too many.

This movie is a masterpiece. I will have to buy this DVD, and I don't buy many DVD's.

Good for you, Monkey. I still have to wait for the Blu-Ray. Crappy Irish cinemas. Glad to hear you loved it.
