John Byrne's Indiana Jones

That's proving the case right now.

I've been going through my comic collection, looking at some of the big titles from 1982, and with no luck.

The timing of adverts might also throw out our expectations of when this one appeared. I noticed adverts in September issues proclaiming things "coming this summer".

It could well be Savage Sword of Conan, as I didn't have any of those in the right timeframe to check through.

While I have several thousand hard copy comics, I have many more on discs. As long as the adverts haven't been edited out, I might have some luck.

How about Master Of Kung Fu 121, anyone?

I don't own a single issue of that title in any format.

It's dated February 1983, though.

Available for download at various sites if it is significant.

VF is remembering Conan, so I would think it might be one of those titles. I think I'm going to have to bust open a few Mylar bags on my next trip to the local comic shop.

Great job tracking this down everyone...we'll find it.

In the meantime, if you haven't already, check out our new Facebook page on The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones. Good stuff there, and more on the way!

MAN, this was a great series!

I'm relatively confident that this is the issue, not Conan, as this was not part of Denny O'Neil's stable as editor and he tended to advertise within his own books.

I've had it listed as containing IJ material, for archiving but presumed it was part of the soapbox.

I'll check if I have copy when I visit the family home next week.

Hopefully someone will beat me to it so I don't have to trawl through boxes that haven't been opened for 20 years!

Excellent. I'm going to try to hit up the local comic shop this week and I'll see if they have a copy.

Good luck Harvey! Don't rely on my 28-year-old recollection as being too accurate. All we can really verify is a publisher and approximate time period. Although I was avidly collecting a handful of Marvel superhero books at the time, I never saw the ad in any book I owned, but rather in a friend's books that they had brought with them to school. That could mean Shang-Chi, Conan, or any number of books Marvel was publishing at the time that I wasn't collecting!

Oh, I'll find it. It might take some time, but I'm tenacious. And OCD. And a geek. That combination usually results in some piece of 70's or 80's memorabilia ending up in my ever-growing collection. ;)

From Rinzlers book on indy page 129 a close up of the pencil drawing for Byrnes planned Sentinel story : the staff of Peril. I know I've seen that page of indy's office somewhere. Maybe in the back of a micronauts comic.

Mitch:

Nice job. I didn't even think of enlarging that shot. I got a little higher res scan to get some detail on Byrne's comments. Btw, I WANT that finished Sentinel piece hanging on my wall. :D

There's got to be a way to find out how Rinzler scored it for the book. Follow up question for him...?

Well Mr Byrne used to live in the town next to me. But was famous for not talking about the Marvel indy work. He had big plans but Marvel wanted only two issue story arcs and lucasfilm had to review everything. So he moved on. He is still here in CT but works for IDW doing Star Trek and Next Men. I think all his art on indy was bought by George Lucas. I own many of the indy marvl and dark horse comic artwork originals but the Byrne pieces are like gold. Rinzler took the image from the Lucasfilm archives.

I can tell from his forum that he's reticent regarding his relationship with Lucasfilm. He was SO far ahead of his time. These days, it's all 6-part arcs to set up eventual trade paperbacks.

Man...if Lucas would release that Sentinel piece as a print...

Perhaps you could talk to him about his run for a future IndyCast...? (y)

I would love to but he won't even do con appearances anymore. We were going to get him for our ComiCONN next August as part of the indy 30th celebration. But no dice. If I see him
I'll ask if he'll do the Indycast. But I really doubt it.

For those who may not be aware of John Byrne's response regarding the further adventures...

Were those two Indiana Jones issues the only ones you were supposed to do or was a longer run originally envisioned? If longer, why was it cut short?

JB: I'm going to do my best not to whine at you here. INDIANA JONES was one of the Worst Experiences I've had as a comicbook professional. It started out well enough -- I saw "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and came out of the theater with my brain abuzz with all kinds of story ideas for such a character, expecially set against the fascinating millieu of the 1930s. The first obstacle turned out to be Shooter (ser-prize!!) He didn't want to do an Indiana Jones book. Thought it would have no sales appeal. It was Jim Salicrup who pointed out that more people had heard of Indiana Jones than of Any Marvel character. So the book got greenlighted, written and drawn by yours truly.

Then came the second hurdle. Obviously, one of the chief attractions of such a book would be the Saturday Morning Serial feel one could evoke -- collosal, impossible cliffhangers at the end of every issue. Right? Well, not as far as Shooter was concerned. He was in his "one issue" mode at that time -- all stories must be resolved in one issue (except the ones he wrote himself, of course!). I could do "cliffhangers", he said, but only if I resolved them in The Same Issue. Some cliffhanger, huh?

Ahh. . . but this was only the Beginning! Next came the liason with LucasFilm, a woman who clearly understood nothing about the way comics were produced, and who had no inclination to learn. It went like this: I wrote the plot, submitted it to LucasFilm for approval. It was approved. Drew the pictures, likewise submitted, likewise approved. Wrote the script, submitted it -- she asked for plot changes. Er, no, we said -- that was two steps ago. No, she said, want plot changes!! And when the first issue was finally complete, she decided she liked the plot I'd submitted months earlier for the third issue even better, and wanted that to be the first issue. We talked her out of that one. After two issues of this insanity, I gave up the ghost.

There was no way to work if each step could be overturned by someone who did not understand the process. (This did not change after I left, by the way. Tom DeFalco later told me that when Marvel did the adaptation of the second movie, each step was approved as above, then one week before the book was to go to the printers, she called up and asked for a different penciler!!!!) Okay. . . . so I whined a little bit.

Someone who really likes the image could see if John would do
a recreation but I'm not sure he would be interested in the subject matter. Or you could always have someone like Anthony Castrillo do a recreation for a fraction of the price.

We're talking with artist Matt Busch for a print for our 2011 comiconn. Maybe doing this in his style would be a good idea? Hmmmm
