At my grandfather's funeral a few weeks ago, I met a real-life archeologist! He was a really sweet and likable guy, and he confessed to being an Indy fan. He even loved KOTCS (YEAH, BABY!!!!!)! He told me that he has traveled the world and found some neat artifacts in South America and such, and that one time he stumbled upon a big hoarde of gold.

Faster than you can say, "Hold on to your potatoes!", thieves and tomb robbers and such instantly came in droves to take the gold for themselves. Needless to say, the archeologist survived, but he said he actually had to fight off and survive attacks by bandits while keeping safe this treasure! Material for a fictionalized adventure novel if you ask me!!!

As much as I'd like to believe it, there's just something that tells me this story went through a recolorization somewhere on its way from the source to our forum.

I have to agree with Finn it sounds a bit far fetched.

If someone found out about something valuable being found I could see it. Look at the trouble people in the US sometimes have getting away from a casino on an Indiana Reservation after a big win.

Not far fetched modern archeologist have had hostage situations with the locals and what not and returned to tell the tale.

I know a Billionaire crime fighter...

...and was hoping for Batman but all I got was Wonder Woman

It's just what he told me. He could have been lying, but he was such an awesome dude that I don't think he's the kind to puff up his own escapades. I believe him!

"You don't believe me, Finn and Nurhachi? You will. You will become true believers!" ;)

It would help if you were able to recount a little better what he exactly told you. Even if it was true, the way it's represented in the opening post makes it sound like a tall tale. No offense.

And who knows, maybe he didn't exactly lie to you, but left some details vague and then the listener's imagination filled in the blanks...

Archaeologists are notorious 'storytellers' who puff-up their own escapades. It's an occupational hazzard.

It's part of being an archaologist. When we're on digs, after the sun has set, we sit around - either at a local watering hole or a campfire (if we're somewhere that remote) - telling each other tales our exploits. It becomes a big game of one-ups-manship. We also do it in the classroom to keep our students enthralled.

It just becomes a habit, to 'thrill' people with our adventures... even if they're perhaps a little more thrilling in the telling then they were actually were in actuality.

Had to chuckle about that last comment, Shovelbum. :D
And yes, it might be true ... to some degree, I have to admit. :p
