List your favourite fantasy films.

Highly inapplicable is Harry Potter. It's family and children's and doesn't belong at all in this thread.(n)

Here's mine. I might leave out some by accident. Both high-fantasy and low-fantasy apply.

LEGEND (Director's Cut with Jerry Goldsmith score)
DragonSlayer
DragonHeart
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Clash of the Titans
Labyrinth
The Dark Crystal
The NeverEnding Story
Conan the Barbarian
KRULL
EXCALIBUR
WILLOW
The Adventures of Baron Muchausen

What?

Honey, Harry Potter totally counts. It's rather silly of you to say that it doesn't simply because you're not a fan, and not to mention hypocritical of you to say that, then go on to list Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Willow, etc.; which are themselves very family friendly films aimed at younger audiences.

LEGEND (Director's Cut with Jerry Goldsmith score)

I agree, except I actually prefer the Tangerine Dream score for the dance scene. I wish I could have the directors cut version of Lili dancing with the extended TD dance track.

Labyrinth
The Dark Crystal
The NeverEnding Story
WILLOW

Yes, yes, yes, and yes. I also like...

Return to Oz (6/10)
The Wizard of Oz (7/10)
Ladyhawke (5/10)
Nightbreed (7.5/10)
The Princess Bride (8/10)
Time Bandits (7/10)
The Company of Wolves (7.5/10)
Pan's Labyrinth (8/10)
City of Lost Children (8.5/10)
MirrorMask (6/10)
The 10th Kingdom (7.5/10)

And here's a pic of Madmartigan because, well, why not? He's hot.

You’ve all pretty much covered my list. I’m especially impressed to see Return to Oz. I thought the poor film was all but forgotten. I just recently saw Willow and whilst it was blatantly a Hobbit rip-off in many respects…I found it enjoyable. I also just recently saw a version of Snow White staring Sigorney Weaver that I found especially good. Plus how can one forget Excalibur and Robin Hood? This would be the genre I’m most into. I’m a complete fantasy dork. Plus Harry Potter totally counts. I’d like to throw in some Harryhausen classics:

- The 7th Voyage of Sinbad
- Jason and the Argonauts
- The Golden Voyage of Sinbad
- Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger

I love watching the older crowd look at me with awe when I bring up movies like this. I was born in the wrong era.

Nah mate, you've picked pretty much mainstream classics. Throw in something like The Curse of the Cat People to get a rise from us old guards....

Return to Oz rocks. It's a darn shame that it bombed like it did.

I just recently saw Willow and whilst it was blatantly a Hobbit rip-off in many respects…I found it enjoyable.

George Lucas has basically admitted that the only reason he did Willow was because he couldn't get the rights to do a Hobbit movie. I'm glad he couldn't, because then we wouldn't have Willow. ;)

I also just recently saw a version of Snow White staring Sigorney Weaver that I found especially good.

Eep. Snow White: A Tale of Terror. I can't believe I forgot that one. My sister and I used to rent it like every month when we were kids.

Another one I forgot, Beastmaster!

It was weird when I realized that my brother and I were enjoying it for entirely separate reasons. :dead:

Yeah, I didn't want to be the one to say it, but this is true. I think most people have seen 7th Voyage of Sinbad, and Jason and the Argonauts

Return to Oz is closer in tone to the L. Frank Baum books of Oz compared to the musical The Wizard of Oz.
In my DVD store, we put the Harry Pooper DVD's in the Family section. Just not a fan of it whatsoever. Too popular too fast... I did see the first two in theaters and it made me go ...

Same here. I'm 29 yet I feel even older since I enjoy films even as far back as the 1920's.

Whats the one w/ all the greek gods, and the hero has to go slay Medusa..oh

Clash of the Titans.

Yea and most of the others I'd name were mentioned, like Jason and the Argos, Princess Bride, Pan's Labrynth.

I really Really want a Legend Of Zelda based on the SNES version of the game. But the thing is, I know even if they do someday make it, it will almost certainly suck because Nintendo will market it for kids.

Watch Ridley Scott's LEGEND (the directors cut, mind). It's the closest thing you're going to get.

Oh, and it's awesome.

Nice! (y)

I just saw this trivia note from the IMDB concerning The Beastmaster:

"Although it was a box-office failure at the time of its release, it has become one of the most successful movies in history of cable-TV."

I believe it! I must have seen that sucker a hundred times on cable over the years. Great fun movie! Kodo and Podo rock! (y)

Shigeru Miyamoto was actually inspired by Ridley Scott's LEGEND (Director's Cut, seconded) for The Legend of Zelda. Little bit of factoid.

There's an old Hater saying about confusing Willow with Pillow, cause they both help to put you to sleep....

I need to check it out again and see how it works for me...

Would Neil Jordan's The Company Of Wolves qualify more as horror than fantasy, or is it an even mix?

In my mind, fantasy and horror go hand in hand. I've never thought of Company of Wolves as a true horror film, though.

I SAID NO HARRY POTTER DAMM!T! Sh!t's only from 1997. The books... In my store we put it in the Family section. It stays the hell away from Fantasy in my shop.

Ray Harryhausen was a genius. Was meaning he's retired.
