Most Moving Film Score

I'm horrified that the work of Bernard Herrmann has not been mentioned so far. He's the best, and his score for VERTIGO is the most astounding piece of film composition I've ever heard.

I was going to mention that, actually. I just remembered how haunting that score was. It fit perfectly with the film, which I have actually come to appreciate more over the years. I used to absolutely hate it. While it still isn't my favorite, it is beautiful and has some great moments.

There are a number of scores that I like, but I think the most moving are:

Gladiator by Hans Zimmer
Dances With Wolves by John Barry
The Goonies by Dave Grusin
Transformers by Steve Jablonsky
WALL-E by Thomas Newman

The score for The Goonies by Dave Grusin was never officially released, however, if you know where to look, you can find it online. I really really like the score for Transformers, one of the best in recent years. The scroe for WALL-E was great, it really set the mood for that movie.

Here are some of my favs:

Transformers (I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the theme of the Autobots first arriving on Earth. Kudos, Jablonsky!!!!!!!!!!!)

The Mask of Zorro (so romantic and thrilling, great use of Spanish music and tap-dancing! Also keep your ears peeled for some jaguar growls!)

The Incredible Hulk (the romance theme for Bruce and Betty absolutely rips me to pieces...)

King Kong 2005 (the scenes of Kong being subdued on Skull Island's beach, his sickeningly poignant antics on the ice pond, and the entire Empire State Building sequence makes me practically flood my room with tears)

The Mummy (wonderful romance theme for Rick and Evey!)

Spider-Man 3 (I'm referring to, of course, the reawakening of Flint Marko after the accident when he reforms, and the death of Harry Osborne)

POTC 3 (the death of William Turner, the death of Davy Jones, the death of Weatherby Swann, the death of James Norrington, Will and Elizabeth's last day before he goes off to perform his ten years of Captainship, Elizabeth's goodbye to everyone as she leaves the Black Pearl, etc. One of the greatest film scores of all time. :hat: )

Hellboy (Red and Liz's love theme)

KOTCS (the marriage of Indy and Marion)

Star Wars Episode III (the unforgettable Order 66 sequence, Immolation, Rise Lord Vader, Battle of the Heroes)

Iron Man

The Dark Knight

Series of Unfortunate Events

Superman Returns

Bruce Broughton's The Rescuers Down Under score. Beautiful, beautiful music! It's long been an inspiration in my art. The track "Cody's Flight" just lights up my imagination.

I just realized another movie with a very moving score: Forrest Gump. It's kind of hard to notice, but I watched the credits, and the score captures what a sad and depressing movie it is.

I honestly can't say what my single choice of a most moving film score would be.
Clint Mansell's score for THE FOUNTAIN must be one of the most moving scores that I know. Listening to the raw soundtrack still blows me away.

I guess that Michael Nyman's score for THE PIANO would also be one of my choices.

The way Kubrick cleverly employs some of Beethoven's (genius) Ninth Symphony in Clockwork Orange as well as Strauß and Ligeti in 2001 is phenomenal and I'd deem them "most moving film scores" as well.

I also still think that John Williams produces some of the most moving scores. It's like in every motif or theme he creates he searches for the shortes connection to the audience's heartstrings or something. Of course that style has positive and negative sides.

Speaking of John Williams... I find that Joe Hisaishi, whom I didn't know until I began exploring Miyazaki's 1000s of unbelievably well made movies starting with Spirited Away a couple of years ago, is kinda like John William's musical brother. His themes and pieces are magic.

Oh ...and I just gotta put Vangelis' BLADE RUNNER score in. It's more than mood-setting. It's the soul of the movie.

Ah, and slightly unrelated to film scores I think that Bear McCreary creates TV's most impressive and moving music for Battlestar Galactica.

^^^ that is really, really good. wow.

Anyways, my input on this thread (coincidently they both involve a beach of some sort)

Alan Silvestri, Cast Away (end credits but also sort of the main theme)
Knowing that they couldn't get back together plus this music with it, just totally brutal.

---------------------

Angelo Badalamenti, The Beach (pretty much the main theme of the actual beach)
I feel as this movie is underrated, but can totally see why someone might not dig it---but this theme (kicks in around :30 seconds) is unreal. When watching the movie you feel as though that IS the only song that could be playing while arriving at such a location.

Michael Kamen's - Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves has an amazing score. Here is the opening theme "Overture" with Robin Hood's theme (sorta) at around 1:06 and again at 2:03. I have a huge soft spot for this movie. :whip:
