Jurassic Park is really a terrific movie, too, which essentially qualifies as Sci-Fi.
Ahh yes...add that to my list, and the Lost World...which I thought was decent.

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY is truly the best this genre has to offer. Beautiful, wonderful stuff.
I have to admit, I've never seen the whole movie...I've never gotten around to it...NO EXCUSES THOUGH!

You guys basically covered all my top favorites. I’m glad someone mentioned Jurassic Park. I was on the verge of bringing it up but I wasn’t entirely sure if it could be included in this genre. I’m a very large fan of John Carpenters The Thing and I also greatly enjoyed Jeff Goldblums The Fly. The original Predator is a very good movie. I've always seen it as "The Most Dangerous Game" with science-fiction twists. They’re basically sci-fi horror however. But then the aliens series is also. I think you could technically classify a lot of superhero flick into this as well. I loved Starship Troopers as well and the whole satire/propaganda of the entire thing. I don't think a lot of people got it though.

2001 is a masterpiece. The shots of the cradle of life at the beginning. The first 20 minutes featuring nothing but apes is a great opening. The music makes the 10-minute space scenes easier to watch. The part where Dave gets into HAL's system and it sings Daisy is a scene I always rewatch.

Also adding to my list:

The Andromeda Strain (original of course)
The Matrix...didn't really dig the other two

Planet Of The Apes
Beneath The Planet Of The Apes
Escape From The Planet Of The Apes
Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes
Battle For The Planet Of The Apes

The premise of the 2001 Planet Of The Apes was interesting, but ultimately, not interesting enough to warrant sequels.

I LOVE 2001. Every frame is like a painting in a museum. To me 2001 is an expression of ideas too great to be expressed in words but can only be expressed in imagery and music.

Oh snap! I always forget that it was Burton who did the Planet of the Apes remake.

Jeez, who greenlit that?

In order:

Planet of the Apes
Jurassic Park
Battlestar Galactica (2003 - I think of the miniseries as a 3 hour movie)
Star Trek: Generations
Star Trek: First Contact
Beneath the Planet of the Apes
Escape From the Planet of the Apes
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
Battle of the Planet of the Apes

I didn't mention SW because I think of that as fantasy, not Sci-Fi ;)

The Whip was actually referring to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, I believe (he was probably confused by the post he was responding to).
