Anime

Is anyone here into Japanese Anime films? What films would you recommend? What are the "essentials" of anime? What do/don't you like about anime?

I rented "Spirited Away" a while back and thought it was pretty good. Last night I rented "Princess Mononoke" and I'm about halfway through the movie. Facinating story.

Okay, "Q"-- I'll have to keep those titles in mind. I'm not an anime junkie or any thing, I'm just checking it out.

Finished watching "Princess Mononoke" last night. Japanese animation is bizzare, I have to say. Beautiful music in this film. Interesting story. Only who the heck IS Princess Mononoke, anyway? It wasn't San the wolf girl...

I remember watching dragonBallZ when I was a kid, I always found it amazing how a fight could last about 10 episodes.

I agree. Dragonball Z, Pokeman, Yu Gi Oh...that' isn't really anime its just Japanese product selling cartoons.

However, you really got to be aware/warned of what you are watching when you do decide to watch anime. The Japanese can get pretty graphic in their cartoon depictions of nudity and violence.

Yes, I've heard. Can you rent titles with this kind of content at your local Blockbuster?? What anime movie titles have this kind of content in them? I've heard of Manga and Hentai, whatever they are. I know they have to do with sex somehow...

basically these are the terms:

Manga is the japanese comic style..
Anime is the japanese cartoon style
Hentai *ahem* that is japanese cartoon porn

Manga is often used when talking about Anime but i think thats in fact the comics, not the cartoons. But then again there's a producer company named Manga that does anime stuff so that's confusing.

Woo! ANIME!!!!

Sorry.

Anyway, do you care about ratings? AKA. Language/sexuality/etc...

If not,
Evangelion - kind of an essential, end-of-the-world Anime (though if you watch it prepare to be confused out of your mind! I finally figured it out though)

Outlaw Star - my personal favorite. Lots of space action

If so,

Cowboy Bebop - more space goodness

Gundam - Gundam Wing is my favorite, good giant robot Anime, with political issues mixed in.

Trigun - my second favorite. Sort of a western.

Any more questions, feel free to ask!

BTW: I hate poke'mon, Yugi-oh, etc...

I'm a big Cowboy Bebop fan myself. The soundtrack for the series (which I own) is awesome. (Though I do get funny looks as it cuts from jazz to a harmonica solo...) I've watched some other stuff (Outlaw Star, Gundam) but for some reason I don't like anything as much as Cowboy Bebop.

Spike Spiegel kinda reminds me of Indy. (In a John Woo sort of way...:))

The Animatrix

Remember how lame and confusing the sequels to The Matrix were? Well, a great sequel did finally come out in the form of "The Animatrix"- 9 short animated films set in the world of The Matrix, produced by the Japanese anime houses whose work had inspired the Wachowskis in the first place. They're in all different styles, and the acting and music and writing and stories are great- higher calibre than most anime- so I'd recommend that DVD. It's the one that should've been released on the big screen, and Reloaded/Revolutions should have gone straight to video... but we Westerners don't accord anime the respect it deserves.
Speaking of which, there's a good documentary on the whole world of anime on the same disc. Check it out! (Gosh, I sound like a salesman.)

Scribe, Actually I didn't care for the Animatrix that much. It not really a sequal , just random events in the Matrix. It is worth looking into, though. A coupe of them are pretty good, and the one made by the Bebop crew was very good. I ust wouldn't highly reccommend it.

Fair enough, Adventurer. It isn't a sequel. The thing is, the Matrix was never a sequelisable story. Once you've had the moment of discovery when a character goes "My God, my life's not real, I'm just a body in a bubble!" the best part of the story's been told. So I thought it was a cleverer approach to bounce round The Matrix and explore different characters' different realities.
Interesting you liked "Kid's Story"- the best one for me was "The Second Renaissance", the two-parter that set up how the heck the machines took over in the first place, and why humanity scorched the sky. As one of the producers pointed out in the "Making Of" doco, Japan does post-apocalyptic stories really well because they ARE a post-apocalyptic society. They have had atom bombs dropped on them! No surprise, then, that Akira, for example, actually opens with an h-bomb glassing Tokyo, and then the story begins...
