I'm sorry but the bluray (well and bluray of older movies in general) just seems like a total waste

Then you aren't watching on the right TV because there is a BIG difference between Blu Ray and a standard DVD.

There is a sizeable difference... Even when comparing the clips from ROTLA, TOD and TLC (on the the Blu-ray KOTCS DVD) against their DVD counterparts. Suddenly a lot more detail comes to life... the background becomes clear (as opposed to blurred) and scenes have a lot more visual depth. It’s a bit like the difference between stereo and 5.1.

You should check out Casablanca (1942) or The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) sometime. They are a revelation in high definition. There are details visible that I've never seen in these films before, even in the theater.

I only have two of those films, so I can't speak to all of them. For me, my Casino Royale DVD looks a touch better. My Blade Runner* DVD looks exactly like that.

*Which, by the way, will be my next Blu-ray purchase.

I watched some of Blade Runner on Blu Ray over the weekend and it looked tremendous. The outdoor skylin / city shots look completely modern.

No. I'm sorry I know there's a difference.. It just seems like a waste to me.

Some new shows it looks like a big difference but most things especially the older movies don't look very different at all.
In those DVD vs bluray pics of the old movies the DVD pics looked better

Wow, those Blu-ray comparisons are pretty astounding. I don't have a blu-ray player and never watched an entire movie with one.

Today I was at Target, anticipating my plans to grab Indy 4 DVD, first thing in the morning, and they had Spider-man 3 playing on blu-ray.

The image looked great, but the CGI looked WAY, and I mean WAY more exaggerated than I remembered, almost to the point of pixar fake. Now that might just be a quality of that film, but how do heavy loaded CGI films hold up on blu-ray players?

I think the most impressive Blu Rays I've seen so far is Speed Racer and the Planet Earth series. Wasn't a huge fan of the Speed Racer movie itself, but the colors and details were just amazing.

Surprised nobody has posted their "I got it!" yet! Hopefully photos including the disc art for the 2-disc appear. ;)

Hoping to pick mine up tonight.
