Do the Indy movies have an axe to grind?

One thing i was always unsure of about the Indy movies is the extent that they are actually religious, in Raiders the power of God is very B movie and there is very little that is really religious about it, in ToD we had Voodoo, people with super-strength (Mola Rom) and ultimately Indy embraces some sort of spiritual power to defeat Mola Rom, however the ending of LC leaves no room for ambiguity we see miracles and the film sees this rather than as a B movie climax but as a profound experience...

But the question is do the films have any axe to grind in this area or are they just fun adventure movies?
Did the Big three want us to take away something from the movies?
