Egyptian sex cult goddess Mut

She has a familiar name.

A recently deciphered Egyptian papyrus from around 1,900 years ago tells a fictional story that includes drinking, singing, feasting and ritual sex, all in the name of the goddess Mut.

Researchers believe that a priest wrote the blush-worthy tale, as a way to discuss controversial ritual sex acts with other priests.

The newly deciphered tale refers several times to having sex. At one point a speaker implores a person to "drink truly. Eat truly. Sing" and to "don clothing, anoint (yourself), adorn the eyes, and enjoy sexual bliss." The speaker adds that Mut will not let you "be distant from drunkenness on any day. She will not allow you to be lacking in any (manner)."

The text is fragmentary, and researchers cannot be certain how the full story unfolded.

This "cult fiction" interpretation of the papyrus is backed up by the Greek writer Herodotus, who lived more than 2,400 years ago. He wrote that "it was the Egyptians who first made it a matter of religious observance not to have intercourse with women in temples, nor enter a temple after such intercourse without washing." (That translation is from "Herodotus Volume 1," Harvard University Press, 1990.)

Did Marion name her son after the goddess?

A funny thought. Maybe the passionate memories of moments spent with a certain Fedora wearer not unknowledgable with Ancient Egypt lore were indeed inspiration enough.

On a similar note, the essay "Sounds of the Netherworld" by the rather delectable, but above all eminent Egyptologist Colleen Manassa discusses sexuality, allegory and allusions in Ancient Egyptian religious texts like the Underworld Books, e.g. the one of Amduat; there quite explicitly so in respect to the Eight Hour of the night, in which sounds are vividly described in the texts to allude to and paint a divine tableau of "...the sexual union of Hathor, in her cosmic manifestation of the goddess of the eye of the sun, with the unified Re-Osiris at the time of the New Year and the [Nile river] inundation..."

So who said reading papyri is a dry exercise?
And let's thank all the Gods that Lucas didn't have Marion name Mutt like Re-Osiris or Hathor...

"Hey, Hathor, through me your pocket knife!"

I guess if you rut like a dog and can't tell what breed bred you, Mut is as good a name as any to indulge...
