But I'll try to be positive and say... well, there's another person on the project who'll be trying to make up for the last film.

Koepp seemed pretty happy with his work from what I remember.

Koepp also wrote Jurassic Park and Spiderman, two really good movies. I think his work on KotCS was bogged down by having to fit in all the plot elements and set pieces that Lucas and Spielberg wanted and make them fit together. Plus if any of the big wigs involved don't like the script they'll do rewrites or get another guy.

Koepp written films make him the 5th most successful screenwriter of all time. That's a pretty dubious honor.

Ever since this movie's announcement, am I the only one who feels that Spielberg is NOT the man to bring Indy back to glory? Blame for the last dirge is as much his as Lucas' and Koepp's. Stevie has become a proficient, polished filmmaker, not the heartfelt, instinctive genius of old; his films these last ten years - Munich aside - feel like stodgy, self-important period pieces. Technically slick, handsome, well-performed, but just...fine. "Fine" as in "well, that's nice, worthy, ummm, what film were we talking about again?"

Maybe he feels - as Georgie did - that Indy is his bambino, and will not even brook the possibility of vacating the director's chair for another, just as Lucas would only agree to the film's artifact if it was his idea. Skull indicated that Spielberg's heart, though it may be in the right place, simply is not invested in these old-fashioned, B-movie inspired Sunday serial stories anymore. It's as if he feels such movies aren't "worthy" pursuits. And now his go-to guy DK is back to "collaborate"...

This news is just amazing!
Every time I was checking out movie news since Indy 4 I had the hope in the back of my head that one of the headlines would be Indy 5 with Ford announced and now it's finally happened! :)

But I gotta say all this negativity about Fords age I read everywhere online is just crazy to me.
In basically every Force Awakens interview Ford was asked if there would be a Indy 5.
It's obvious people really want him back.

But as usual the internets is just full on negativity.
Ford IS Indy, as he grows older so does Indy. There's no rule that says Indiana Jones have to bounce around doing crazy stunts like a madman.
Ford is in pretty good shape and can probably run around, throw some punches and ride some horses still.

I would love for the movie to a bit more sombre with Indy reflecting on his mortality and going on a final important adventure.
And personally I think giving the film a smaller budget in line with the originals would be a good idea. Maybe that could bring back a little of the old Spielberg who had to think on his feet and be smart about the movie.

I thought Kasdan might be in play, but I guess he's too busy with Ford's other iconic character right now.

Even though it feels like Spielberg is waving a huge red cape at the internet by hiring Koepp again, it does make me wonder if they're still planning to use their Indy 5 idea from a few years back. I'm referring to the idea Spielberg said he, Lucas, and Ford had all agreed upon.

The fact that it apparently involved exploring a new genre always gave me hope we might see the franchise veer into classic horror. (And Indy finally getting to be the kind of occult specialist that was such a key part of Lucas' original concept.)

I am a huge Indiana Jones and Star Wars fan and signed up here at the end of last year but only posted here a few times because 1. I have been busy with Star Wars TFA Which I loved and thought It was up there with the OT! and 2. I forgot my password on here:( but I have since recovered my password obviously!;) I am super stoked about Indy 5 and with the success and critical Acclaim of TFA I am sure Indy 5 will be great! as for Harrison and his age, he was great In TFA and even people who did not Like KOTCS could probably agree that Harrison was the highlight of the film. KOTCS was IMHO Just as good as TOD but not as good as Raiders or LC, with Raiders being the best! Mutt Swinging In the trees not withstanding KOTCS was a really fun film and being that I really get into the Ancient Alien stuff with Erich Von Däniken I did not mind the Alien aspect of the film and actually really dug it! All that being said I think Disney/Lucasfilms really has to hit a grand slam with the script and story and the guy to do that has to be Lawrence Kasdan IMHO, he wrote two of the best films off all time, Empire Strikes Back and Raiders Of The Lost Ark, and he and Abrams did a great Job with TFA! and finally although I have no problem with CGI it was really refreshing seeing more Practical Effects in TFA and would love for that to be the case with future Lucasfilms/Disney Films including any future Indiana Jones film...:D

Some things this film needs:

More grit. They gotta get back to the high level of danger and peril the OT had. Indy is supposed to be about getting out of tough situations.

A strong villain. Someone with an agenda people can understand but also kind of admire like Belloq in Raiders.

A 60s setting. Something mid decade when the spy craze was going on. Let's bring Indy back to the place where the original inspiration for his character came from.

References to his age. They can't hide it, might as well use that to put him in the fight of his life.

Tying into the last one, Indy 5 needs a sense of finality. If this is it for Ford and Spielberg, they need to make it that way right from the start. Have him retire at the beginning of the film, have something happen that forces him to go back out into the field one last time to save humanity and then finish it once and for all.

They have to make it epic and final. One last hurrah. It can't be episodic. It's gotta be it and done.

I've argued this before on here (and it bugs me to see it come up again) so won't go beyond this one post about it, but "bringing Indy back to the place where the original inspiration comes from" means taking him back to the 1930s and the old cliffhanger serials popular at the time - not a 1960s spy setting. I don't deny there is James Bond influence in the Indiana Jones films, but they were not the "original inspiration."

I think embracing the era too directly this time out would be a mistake. You can see why they did it with Skull, because it was the first movie to move us to a new decade and they wanted to establish it strongly. But I think it would be really awkward if this movie also tried to encapsulate the zeitgeist of the 60s (if that's indeed the decade). It should put Indy somewhere overseas and remote and not concern itself so much with the cultural backdrop stuff and instead just focus on its story.

Going to be a bit funny watching Indy in the 60s, and Indy himself will be in his 60s too not a problem as he does not look 73 does he more like 58. Looks after himself.

I think the 60s will still be a good time. The world was still very unexplored, with no google maps etc. There are a lot of places you could use as settings for the movie and hide ruins etc. Harrison will be great!:whip:

he's OK I Loved Jurassic Park and The Lost World but I was hoping for Kasden :(

As was I! Although Koepp's usually does alright.

Papers?! Yes, of course! Yeah just finished reading the news in Variety myself, an hour ago! Morning edition! Haha! Run. Run! ......Run!!!

I meant to interject in earlier speculations on who would/should be penning Indy 5, that hiring Kasden does not a guaranteed successful film make.
Of course, I loved his brilliant contributions to Raiders and Empire Strikes Back, but I remember being rather dissapointed with movies like Mumford and Dreamcatcher. Kasden was initially the big draw for me with Dreamcatcher and I hated it. Utterly forgettable, except for the things I wish I could forget about it. (n) Haven't seen Wyatt Earp since it's first video release so I'm due to revisit that one.

All things considered, I still feel like Kasden or maybe Darabont were the "top men" for the job and my instincts tell me that Kasden would, in addition to being a very creative scribe, also be a good filter or bouncer at the proverbial door, to possibly raise a red flag at any ideas that might be a little too silly or out of place for the Indy universe. :gun:

Ultimately the screenwriter is there to serve the director/producers and their vision for the film, but that kind of no nonsense input could help steer Spielberg clear of any potential narrative icebergs, instead of being surrounded by a lot of Yes men!

But as much as I appreciate Lucas, hate to say but now that he may be less directly involved, there may be fewer potential landmines to avoid this time out, so hopefully Koepp and co. can deliver something that pleases the Maximum of fans and audiences with the minimum amount of complaints. :whip: (y)

New member here ;) After hearing about this news, I thought it'd be a fitting time to sign up.

First off, I'm a big Indy fan, been one since I was eight or nine. With Indy 5 on the way now, I'm super hyped just on the fact that it's more Indiana Jones, but I'm not sure how they're going to do it with grandpa Indy and a past-his-prime Spielberg.

What are the action sequences going to be like? Indy tries to escape the nursing home? Indy gets his false teeth knocked out by an angry Commie?

What are they gonna call it? Indiana Jones and the Comfortable Chair? Indiana Jones and the Temple of Dementia?

In all seriousness, I just can't see old man Ford pulling off the action stunts he did in Kingdom, and they were already pushing it in 2008. But since they're dead-set on bringing Ford back, I wouldn't mind the idea of presenting parallel dramas, one focusing on the last adventure of Indiana Jones in 1968, and one being a prequel focusing on the journey of a young recasted Indy becoming the man we see in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The stories could even connect to each other, the latter having an effect that ripples on into the former's story.

As for the new actor, maybe they could use the same guy they're going to use in the young Han Solo film, IDK, I just want to see more Indy adventures after this. It would take more of the load off of Harrison, who don't get me wrong, I've always loved in the role, and would allow for an easy transition into the next actor, whoever that may be. I don't think Disney hates money enough to end the franchise here, I think they'll want to make Indy movies for years, maybe even decades, to come, and, whether you like it or not, that would involve recasting the character.

I would have loved if they could have gotten Larry Kasdan to write the screenplay, I'm surprised he never got to write another Indy film after Raiders, and with his return to the Star Wars universe, I was hoping they could've gotten him back for one more Indy. I loved The Force Awakens, to me, it proved that he could still write a damn fine script.

David Koepp though? Very hit or miss. I'm not a fan of Kingdom, but I'm not going to put all of the blame on him. He had to write a script that was using way too many different people's ideas and fit them all into one film. Of course, that messed with the tone and overall plot, but that was inevitable. The dialogue was fine to me. It's not like he can't write a good script, look at Jurassic Park, Spider-Man or War of the Worlds. I'm just a little wary of him.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. Some first post, huh?

Now, we just have to wait three more years...

I think we need to calm down a little on the David Koepp thing. We're still more than 3 years out from this thing and all we're going on is some "inside source" someone had and we all know how reliable those can be. For all we know Koepp may have just been brought to write an early treatment based on Spielberg's ideas on the movie. Whatever Koepp's role is, you can guarantee there will be several drafts they'll go through and we may even see other writers brought in to doctor the script which Spielberg does quite often.

Hmm. People have wondered why they have to wait for as long as 'til 2019, especially given Mr. Ford's advanced age, but since that film comes out pretty much a year before...

...nah. When have you seen Hollywood come up with a convenient plan like that?
