Considered one of the best remakes ever, this also shows what Philip Kaufman's Raiders might have looked like. Frenetic pace and a great tour of SF, also Jeff Goldblum and Leonard Nimoy show up as competing authors. The Nicole Kidman (2007) and Gabrielle Anwar (1993) remakes are nice to look at but forgettable, save for Meg Tilly, in my opinion the best and most persuasive pod person of them all.

The 50s version is the one I saw first when BBC2 used to run b-movie sci fi seasons with invaders from mars, thing from another world etc etc. So whilst I'm a big fan of the original, both films are very much of their time and both standalone as good films. But I think the 70s remake really ups the creepiness stakes, the ending is fantastic too.
