Secret of the Incas (1954)

Secret of the Incas

Saw a movie on TV last night called Secret of the Incas (1954), starring Charlton Heston, about an adventurer who searchers for hidden treasure in the Peruvian jungles. Before seeing this movie I used to think that Raiders was original. :( Did anyone else think that Indy's costume was original?

actually, everybody who claims to know at least a very little bit about indiana jones and still believes that anything about him was original, should revise his or her claim.

or, to be more precisely, if you thought "raiders" was original, you didn't get the joke. it would be like finding out that Scary Movie stole ideas from other flicks.

Congratulations, Mariah, on finally seeing it! One of the great,
unacknowledged predecessors of Indiana Jones - Harry Steele.
Doubly entertaining is that he tracks down the Incan loot by
way of reflecting sunbeam. This is one cool flick!

I hope you recorded this because, still to this very day, it's not
been commercially available. I only have the last 1hr 15 mins or
so in French that I taped from TV in 1990 and have never seen
the beginning. :(

TheRaider has a very good article on the film. I hate that it's never been released on video, as I would love to watch the different elements that inspired the Indy movies firsthand.

It sounds like a great film. I've never seen it but hopefully I'll be able to catch it on television or video someday. I always enjoy watching movies that influenced Indy, as well as films inspired by Indy. :)

I bought a bootleg of the entire film (in English) on ebay. It's quite enjoyable (minus an awful and awfully long singing part from one of the Peruvians).

Indy's costume designer Deborah Nadoolman also mentions how big an influence Secret of the Incas was to Raiders of the Lost Ark in TheRaider.net's recent interview with her.

lol, I just noticed the conversation was about Secret of the Incas and the question how original Indy's costume really is. This above mentioned interview might hold the answer...

I aplogise for the shameless advertisement. :p

Actually that's not an Indy fedora, just a regular fedora like the one that Humphrey Bogart wore. And Wested didn't even exist back then.

I mgiht have been huffing airplane glue, but I thought that the raider at one time had a list of all in Indy's early movie influences, which was really fun to go and watch all of them, even found an early John Wayne Movie called Stagecoach, which is now a fav.

I've never seen this either, but now I want to.

Maybe we could start some kind of grass-roots movement to get the film released on DVD. :)

There are many more additions that I could make to the Influences pages.
If I write them up, would they be posted? The reason I ask is because upon
first joining The Raven, I contacted Influences authour, Indy French, about
helping out and he never replied before mysteriously dropping off the scene
a few days later. I may be a relative *newbie* but this is a subject I'm very
well-versed in and would love to make a contribution.

Thanks, Gilles, I very much appreciate the Deborah Nadoolman interview.
Nice to see "Secret of the Incas" finally getting some acknowledgement
and satisfying to learn that the cast and crew were made to watch the
film several times.

SKA, you're one of the few lucky ones! If anyone wants to campaign
Paramount for its release, I'd sign the petition faster than a whipsnap. :whip:

Secret of the Incas DVD Excellent Quality

I've found this on DVD, a site called ioffer.com. There's also another Indy influenced movie called Watusi (never released on video/DVD). The point referrances are so obvious. Watusi was the sequel to 'King Solomon's Mine' from 1950. A defnitie MUST for Indy fans! :whip:

Hey, Quatermain, Welcome to The Raven! As for your name, I can dig it since
I'm a fan of H. Rider Haggard as well.

"Watusi", YES! Actually, it was released on VHS in the mid '80s. I have a copy
but the print is poor quality. It would be great to see this restored (despite all
the re-used 1950 footage) however I not going to hold my breath for that.
The website you mentioned looks promising so I'll treat myself to a new one.
Thanks for posting it!

Not nearly as top-notch as "King Solomon's Mines" but the first half does
contain a very exciting action scene. Don't want to spoil it for others but
I'm sure you know which one I'm talking about.

Anyway, Quatermain, it's good to have more people like you around here.
Another Raven member, SKAbatula, is into these type of flicks as well but
I think he's on his honeymoon...
