Customizing Indy Figures

I made a (melty-face) Toht a while back, but he was always too scene-specific for my liking.

This head has been sitting on my workbench for a few months waiting for the right body. Thanks to the generosity of forum member Lance Quazar who scored me a SDCC Cobra Commander, Toht is now complete....

A note to the wise - custom glasses at this scale will drive you insane. I sculpted these using 2mm rods, cast them in clear resin and then painted the frames - I won't be doing it again !

Head is a Naboo Engineer / Soldier. Hat is from a standard Raiders Indy. Interestingly, you can hollow one of those hats out to make it removable...time to ditch those hidious oversize KotCS fedoras...

Nick - the wrestling figure will become the German that fights Indy by the plane.

inky skin - Wow Toght looks great. What head did you use? Can we get a close up with out the glasses? Scratch built glasses...I know that was a pain! This is a great figure, now if I could afford the Cobra figure to make my own. I hope you didn't have to pay $30 or more...that is what they are going for on ebay.
Lance if you have any more of these/or know a source for a loose one I would love to get one.

I would love to hear any critique on the soft goods shirt I made for Satipo. I like it as it isn't much bulkier than the plastic one I used before.

"Head is a Naboo Engineer / Soldier"

Can't remove the glasses - they are glued in place. This was the only way to avoid the bulky arms as seen on Henry Sr's frames.

Here is a close up of the face - I 'rebashed' the fedora to get rid of the inaccurate flat-crown that Hasbro gave us.

Luke - your soft goods shirt for Satipo looks great. I'm not a fan of fabric on figures at this scale, but you've done an excellent job of not making it look bulky.

Hot damn, Inky! That head looks great! I almost used that head for my Toht, but I thought it wouldn't work. And you sir have proved me wrong. I like yours better than mine, and if you don't mind, I'm gonna totally steal your idea!!:Du

I'm still not 100% sold on that head being the best one for Toht, but inky's figure is strikingly good nonetheless. I feel like Toht's head needs to be a bit rounder, softer in the cheeks--maybe just uglier in general. ;) Toht wasn't exactly what you'd call a real looker (esp. after his face melted off :p .) Still, I haven't really seen anything that works better so far, but maybe the head itself could be modded a bit to capture a better likeness of the actor. Just my opinion, of course.

You know what I hate about that SDCC Cobra Commander is the fact that the legs are too long. He ends up looking taller than the Indy figures! I replaced his upper legs with the death star trooper upper legs. I'm not sold on them, but they at least make the figure shorter...

Jr. Jones - That's hands down the best Marcus I've seen.

Luke - Like Inky, I usually don't go for cloth on this scale, but that Satipo looks great. How did you prevent it from being bulky? I also love his basket and its contents. Very nice attention to detail.

Inkyskin - Awesome Toht, the best I've seen. The facial expression is perfectly dour.

You know, there was something bugging me about this fig - something I couldn't quite put my finger on. You've nailed it - he's too tall. Toht kinda seemed more 'toady' - and the height of the Cobra Commander figure detracts from that aspect of the characters personality.

As for the head - I think it's almost perfect. Funny - because the donor figure is horrible - really disproportioned (so horrible in fact that Hasbro repainted it and released it again !). Always nice to re-appropriate a peg warmer.

Is the head from this figure designed with a socket to fit on a ball-topped neck, or did you have to dremel it out?

Please don't call it the "Cobra Commander figure." It's Toht. Or, the unreleased Toht body figure if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

It began its life as Toht and was always meant to be Toht. :D

Thanks for the comments guys, glad you are liking my soft goods work. To keep it from looking so bulky I cut the jacket apart and glued it back together in places, like under arms and sides and back. Anything left sown I trimmed down the extra material inside from where it is joined together. Hope this makes sense, just get rid of any unneeded material. I like the way his arms are able to poke through the cut sleeves just like in the film.:D

I am glad to say I am almost finished with this evil kid that has been driving me crazy the last 2 weeks. Here are the wip pics...he is not done yet...

I wish I took a pic of the base figure, it was a generic female body with heavy dremeling and sanding. Here it is after adding different arms and the head I thought would work.

my biggest problem has been trying to find something the right size for the pearls he wears, also just a little more work on the turbin. His arms also look just a bit to long. Any critique/suggestions are welcome.

Wow, that Maharaja looks great! I agree the arms might be a little long, but when they are bent it doesn't look so bad. Maybe a bead store would have something that you could use for his necklace?

The arms do look long. Fully extended, they would reach beyond his knees. Otherwise he looks great. The turban is fantastic. As for the pearls, I have a white plastic beaded "chain" used to keep an ID badge around your neck. It's a little over two feet long. Very similar to this:

If you PM your address, I can get it sent out to you.

Kevin - thanks, yea I am still on the look out for just the right size beads.

Charlemagne - wow what a generous offer. I have one of those as well and it is a bit bigger than it should be. I'll put up a pic of him with one strand of what I tried.

Lance - thanks man and I'll have a few things to add tomorrow:whip:

What about Willie's arms for the Maharaja? They already have similar jewelry and such, and could be easily modded. Not to mention the fact that they have jointed elbows.

Would have to be from the elbow down, since they have sleeves...

Um...yeah, not sure how I overlooked that. ;) That's what I get for commenting without my figures present for reference. :p

The costume bits and the head of that custom are spot on though, regardless of any limb proportion issues. (y)
