MacGyver

Let's get a little love going for this show.

Who else loves this series?

I got the complete series boxset recently and... well... I'm hooked. Nearly finished season 2. About to go watch my fifth episode for today.

The Indy inspiration is of course plainly evident as well...

MacGyver was an amazing show that unfortunetly get's thrown in with the 'cornball' class of shows of that period. (Knight rider..)

One of my favorite moments,Simple due to nostalgia,Was when he used the pressure hose as a jet pack.Classic MacGyver right there!

It most definitely IS cornball. Some episodes more-so than others. But it's not so disgustingly cornball as some other shows from the era. Of course every episode has the "Full House" ending where everyone's laughing over some inane joke... but I do love it still.

Second only to Indy. I'm actually still carrying around a Swiss Army Knife in my keyring...

I have the whole series on DVD as well. Bought each as it came out. Please don't compare it to Indy though it might be all to firmiliar...if you remember; the last episode of MacGyver (Warning: possible MacGyver and/or Indy spoiler)
MacGyver meets the son he never knew he had...who was ALSO a biker in a leather jacket (much like Shia) and who had the same characteristics as his father. So MacGyver hung up the "skates" to spend more time with his son.

I haven't seen it in years, but MacGyver was one of my favorite shows growing up. I also still have my Swiss Army knife that I bought during the heigh of MacGyvermania. I wanted to buy the DVD sets, but the lack of bonus features caused me to push them back on my "Need to Buy" list. :(

On the topic of Indy, there is one episode that sees MacGyver searching for a lost Egyptian treasure (or something like that) that is clearly an homage to Indiana Jones. I recall the episode even opens in a little bar similar to The Raven. And of course, there's also the first TV movie about the search for Atlantis. :D

Saw an episode last night, season 2 where Dalton and Mac escape from two assailants on a motorcycle that strongly mirrors (though predates) the motorcycle chase in LC.

Then of course there's an Episode in Season 1 that's a clear homage to Casino Royale and Bond in general (Mac even introduces himself as "Bond.... James Bond..."). At the end they parachute a red convertible out of a cargo plane, strongly mirroring (and again predating) a scene in The Living Daylights.

...ironic, I say.

As far as "need-to-buy" status... the lack of specials really is very distressing and irritating. Though the Complete Series boxset does have the 2 tv movies which are good to have. Glad I didn't buy the individual seasons like I almost did...

Also, the packaging is awful and really poorly designed for $150. Seasons 1-3 and 4-7 are separated into two little accordion-like packages inside a bigger box. The accordion packages resemble wads of duct-tape (though they're just printed cardboard) and the discs just sit open inside, resting on little cardboard slats. It does an awful job protecting the discs. They freely bounce around and bump up against each other. A few of my discs already have scratches. So buy with caution... if you're going to invest, you may want to get some of those plastic CD sleeves to put the discs in just to keep them better protected.

Wow a McGuyver thread! Awesome! I love this show though I've not seen it in quite a while. Richard Dean Anderson is a Legend. (y)

My sister bought each boxset as it was released. I loved it as a kid and still enjoy watching it every once in a while. I do hope they eventually release those 2 TV movies individually. I'm fed up with companies screwing fans over who buy the products right away and giving those who hold out for the complete thing not only a cheaper price tag, but a fraking bonus to boot!

I agree. Fox did the same thing with M*A*S*H, and a lot of fans had already bought all 11 seasons only to find out that all of the bonuses were on the 11-season box set.

McGyver, great show!
I saw it in spanish, and everytime McGyvers or Pete Thorntons voice are used in an other show or movie I recognise it instantly.

Let me just say this cause I already see this as a trend...

His name is spelled MacGyver. Not McGuyver or McGyver or McDonalds. M-A-C-G-Y-V-E-R.

Ok, that's all. Carry on the discussion, folks.

I love the Atlantis telemovie. I haven't seen much MacGyver I admit, but I do like what I see. It's just amazing how Richard Dean Anderson picked up two great TV series with cult followings. That and Patty and Selma are still watching it.
