Disney to acquire 21st Century Fox

In 1995 they came for ABC and ESPN.
In 2009 they came for Marvel ($4.24 billion).
In 2012 they came for Lucasfilm ($4.05 billion).
In 2013 they pried Indy sequel rights from Paramount.

In 2017... yippee ki-yay, Mouseketeers? I won't launch into an antitrust rant, I'm aware of the Blade Runner curse. Here are Fox's biggest hits... a lot of X-Men and Star Wars. Disney could finally own Star Wars 4. Here's analysis and a ballpark value of $20 billion. Disney's Animal Kingdom did just opened Pandora. With Aliens, Predator, Apes and Kingsman, Disney streaming would have plenty to offer adults in 2018. Or, maybe the deal goes nowhere.

Are you sure about that? Nobody else has picked up that line of thought. In fact, the scuttlebutt seems to indicate that Fox leaked these talks for leverage.

While it's certainly being shopped around (CBS, Verizon, and Netflix have been discussed), the deal is far from dead. It;'s going to get down. To whom and for how much appear to be the only real questions. I still lay even money on Disney coming out on top.

Disney gains too much to let anyone else get it. Getting the X-Men back to fold into the MCU and full control of every part of the Star Wars universe is huge for them.

Sure, but, since Netflix and Amazon have turned streaming rights acquisition into a war of attrition, picking up 21st Century Fox's catalog would be a feather in anybody's cap. That's a lot of material you can keep off the competitors' services. The MCU is strictly secondary to making Disney's streaming service into an absolute must have.

Narratively speaking I would argue getting everything associated with The Fantastic 4 back with Marvel Studios is more important. Though, I have to wonder if this part of the reason why the Inhumans were sent to die on ABC,

Pencils aren't down.

Shares in Fox rose 18% over the week while Disney rose 7% over the same time period. The market wants this deal to happen.

Though there is a disturbing rumor about taking on one of the younger Murdochs as a board member and then take over as the new CEO.

Disney receives about $300M a year in rentals from Netflix. With 60% of Hulu they could host whomever they want.
Buying Fox?s 30% stake in Hulu would give Disney majority control of that streaming service, which the company could position as an adult-targeted entertainment service that stands alongside its family and sports ones, said people close to the company.

Looks like Comcast is officially throwing their hat into the ring. Same parameters would apply to Comcast -- no news network, etc.

An interesting wrinkle has come up. I haven't been able to verify it yet, but it sounds like when Fox acquired the Faux Men and F4 licenses, it was on the condition that they can't be sold, transferred, or traded to anybody else. If true then Disney comes out ahead no matter who acquires Fox.

Seems Comcast is putting together an all stock package? Seems preposterous. Not surprising of the Murdoch's either.

Will Fox be divvied up in a fire sale perhaps?

Happening next week? Valued at $60 billion?

Meanwhile, the production company of Bryan Singer, director of four X-Men movies, has vacated the Fox lot. If you wagered who would soon face sex scandal allegations, Singer would be a safe bet.

Yup.

Another prediction before tomorrow: Rupert Murdoch keeps the Fox name, Disney calls its new acquisition Century. Goes well with various Disney centennials coming next decade.

Disney and Fox shareholders plan to vote July 10. Disney is matching Comcast's all cash offer, but Solo box office and John Lasseter leaving Pixar aren't helping Disney's stock price. Iger has one year left, but sorting this out could distract from a rumored presidential bid.
