Honestly...will there be another Indy film in the next decade?

My comment was more observation than criticism. The crystal skull was employed in a way that was unique to the series, but I think blaming poorly focused characters on that is a false trail.
I took it as such. It's a reasonable observation and one I agree with. :)

Nobody?s talked to me! [Laughs.] But you never know. He?s an old, old friend of the Jones family, so you never know. It would be fun.

The problem is that they never re-use old friends, they always create new old friends (especially in the EU).

Actually I suspect if there was to be another film, that Hurt might return for a few scenes, to me, he's a better replacement for Brody than Dean Stanforth.

Considering that it would be better for Indy to move away from the college environment - as he did in TOD, which appeared at the time to break a pattern before there was a pattern- picking Oxley over Stanforth would be the best option. As long as Hurt is more involved than he looked in KOTCS.

And whether it's Indy who's gone missing somewhere or Mutt who's gone rogue, it's a pretty logical notion that Mutt is away at college being taught not by his father, but by Harold Oxley. It'd be sensible to have him fill the roll, since there won't be college politics involved, one would guess.

Defo like the idea of Ox (JH) being the new 'M'... erhhh Brody. Don't think he needs more screen time per se... just needs to be used accordingly i.e. setting out the quest/challenge at the front end of the movie.

+100 points.

There can truly be no replacement for Marcus Brody, but if the needed someone tho fill that sort of role, Hurt's character is better suited than Broadbent. He could be something of a fatherly figure (to ughhh Mutt) like Brody was to Indy in Raiders as he could be a figure of fun when he is out of his element like Brody was in Crusade.

You have two exceptional actors in Broadbent and Hurt. If they're on the books, give them something significant to do and they'll significantly raise the quailty of the movie (any movie).

I agree with Gonzo and Darth, but for my tastes, I'd prefer to have Indy cast off in a new adventure away from Marshall College, with no recurring characters besides Indy himself.

I also want a toilet made out of solid gold, but it's just not in the cards now is it?

George Lucas should just go ahead and write the screenplay, the dialogue, the fun, the storyboards and then just insert the "treasure" later.
Since when does George Lucas do storyboards?

They should do a very M. Night Shymalan-esque twist: Indy was killed in the Fridge scene of KOTCS. Everything which followed was a dream or the afterlife. Indiana discovers he's on the other side and his adventure is to get out.

That would make sense, he tied up all of his regrets with a neat bow and then got everything he wanted. How fitting.

He bumped his head when he fell into the snake pit in 1912. Woke up in 1957 with a bad hangover, and began to describe his weird dreams.

I agree, one of the pitfalls that sequels have is trying to fit in characters from previous films or to stick with characters that have been added to the franchise along the way. The SW prequels, Die Hard 2, Mummy 3 all spring to mind. Which is why I'd like to see Indy 5 made as an adventure with no character baggage from the others and no overlong exposition as to what happened to all the characters from previous movies that arent in the new one.

Unfortunately, it seems that none of the big three feel that way. Their comments about "learning something new about the character" with every film have less to do with Indy as a person, and more to do with the people in his life from ROTLA on, if you go chronologically through the films. I think the "stand alone" quality of the films is a GREAT concept, but one that is getting increasingly difficult to pull off with all the tie-ins. How can a film stand on it's own if it's expected to carry all the personal baggage from one film to the next? Plus add more with each consecutive film? It's a daunting, cumbersome, and unnecessary task in this fan's opinion.

I think there is plenty to be learned about Indy that could be conveyed with a simple facial expression or Indy's decisions/actions, without having to drag a fleet of recurring characters along. Heck, I think that we'd learn MORE about his character by being introduced to other people from his past that actually have something relevant to add to the plot. Read: more screen time for a character like Mac, less screen time for a character like Oxley. After all, Indy is a world traveler who has globe-trotted for his whole life, and had "many adventures". Surely it's not necessary to stick so close to home with plot devices like Marion being kidnapped twice, and his father once. Sure, let him save someone, but how about someone new for Indy 5? We never new Marion before ROTLA, and we were able to care about her character right off the bat, after all. Heck, try a different twist. Have him fail to save someone, but succeed in saving "the world" or whatever. It's in keeping with his origin story: He left Marion tied up to get the ark. He didn't blow up the ark, either.

So again I say, Indy as the only recurring character, unless it's absolutely necessary to show some exposition scene stateside. My opinion on the matter of course is worth about half a bucket of warm **** (give or take a drop), since George has said recently that he already has the plot worked out, anyway.

No direct quote, but...

You won't have George Lucas to kick around anymore

Lucas unveiled the Special Edition of his future in this New York Times interview, in which he laments the difficulties of getting Red Tails financed, then concludes, “I’m retiring. I’m moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff.”

Aside from a possible fifth Indiana Jones movie, which is more or less handled by software these days, Lucas says he plans to follow his friend Francis Ford Coppola’s example and instead focus on making “more personal” films described as “small in scope, esoteric in subject and screened mostly in art houses”—and most importantly, away from jerks who don’t like what he did with Star Wars.

Per the New York Times:

George Lucas Is Ready to Roll the Credits

He was careful to leave himself an out clause for a fifth “Indiana Jones” film.
