Indy's glasses

Everyone knows the glasses Indy wears in the original three films. (See http://www.theraider.net/films/crusade/gallery/screens/c70.jpg)However, in the new film, he wears a different style of glasses. What intrigues me is how similar they look compared to the glasses that George Hall wore in his portrayal of Old Indy in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. See for yourself:

KOTCS (age 57): http://www.theraider.net/films/indy4/gallery/makingof/vid_21.jpg

Young Indy (age 93): http://www.theraider.net/films/young_indy/gallery/makingof/mo_11.jpg

If he wears glasses to teach, why does he abandon them when he goes exploring? I'd have thought an archaeologist would need to see things close up....

And while I'm at it, how come he has a whip but not a toothbrush and trowel?

Pfft.

The reason I posted this is because I'm wondering if the glasses issue was pure coincidence, or done on purpose to connect Ford's Indy to Hall's Indy. Now, I know Lucas cut Hall from the VHS and DVD releases of YIJC, but (like with Lucas' stance on Sebastian Shaw's removal from Return of the Jedi) that doesn't mean Lucas considers him completely non-canon.

I don't know, it's just some interesting visual continuity.

Heheheh, i like Young Indy (Age 93) and normal Indy (KOTCS Age 57). So you are one of those who say age does not matter, ey (y)

Eh, I was refering to the name of the show when associating the age 93 with the phrase "Young Indy". ;)

I think his smaller glasses in KOTCS reflect the change from the '30s to the '50s. In the 30s, things were bigger--Fedora hat brims were bigger (even in real life); by the 50s, small stingy brim fedoras were popular (think Frank Sinatra's hats). In the 30s, larger eyeglasses were popular; by the '50s, glasses in the style of Indy's 1957 glasses were popular. See for a prime example Harry Truman. Indy's '57 glasses are similar to Truman's.

Indy wears glasses to correct an astigmatism.

I imagine he doesn't wear them in the field because it's impractical. Could be a vanity thing aswell.
