Actually, scratch the New Jersey idea because I forgot that Indy’s car appears to have NY plates (which was one of the main clues I originally followed). I’ve found that some old people tend to move back close to where they grew up, which is why I chose Staten rather than Long Island, etc. Plus, I came across a couple of photos that look like Indy’s street & house. Perhaps he moved there to live with his “daughter/daughter-in-law” against his own will? Your favourite hero turned into a crumbly, ol' fuss-pot!:p

Been to quite a few places in New Jersey but never Princeton. Cherry Hill is no dump but I hesitate to bring up the fact that Jersey receives all the trash from NYC giving it an unfortunate nickname, Garbage State (instead of the proper, Garden State).:( Hopefully, Rocket Surgeon will chime in on this…;)

I have been to several places in NJ that are nice. I have family in Manalapan and Shrewsbury, both nice towns. Overall it just lacks the charm and character of "The Empire State." I usually just drive through it, or go there to watch my New York Giants play.

Have you ever been to Long Island Stoo?

Stoo,
Just a quick note about Hills supermarket for you:

Hills was a supermarket chain formed of 71 stores only based in NY state (perhaps the NC location has been modified? superimposed?).

All 71 stores were either on Long Island or in lower "upstate" NY (Queens, Yonkers, Westchester, etc.) I've found no evidence yet of one on Staten Island.

They were almost always joined to a Korvettes department store. There was a Korvettes on Staten Island, but it did not have a Hills attached to it. In theory, if Hills was there, it would have been attached to the Korvettes.

The store chain went of of business by the mid 80's, which is why it was probably chosen as Indy's supermarket (no advertising rights to deal with).

I am really curious about your Staten Island theory! Share your evidence when you get a chance.

Thanks Stoo, I finally noticed you posted another video. I must say thuogh it gives me another reason to refuse the cannonicity of these old Indy scenes. After visiting all these great places in the world he choses to settle down in Staten Island? I cannot allow myself to imagine the greatest movie hero settling down in that dump. It is easily the worst of the 5 boroughs, and the roads/traffic there are horrible. Sorry for my rant, hopefully no one from Staten Island sees this.

I'm from Staten Island.

I was going to write up a huge treatise on why Staten Island is not the worst of the 5 boros (have you ever been to Queens or the Bronx? Jeez...) but I decided that trying to educate people on the internet is akin to masturbating with a rough sponge. Sure, you can do it, but...why?

I also now live in new Jersey, and few people realize (as I didn't growing up) just how beautiful this state can be. Not only do I live ten minutes from gorgeous beaches, but my family and I are surrounded by farmland: rolling hills, parks, rivers, grassy open spaces....it's fantastic.

Having said that, I too would love to have these all on one DVD.

My point was more about the fact that I don't really think there is anything to do unique to Staten Island when compared to the other parts of the city. Sure the Bronx has some rough areas (that may be an understatment) but it is home to the Yankees, the most popular/storied franchise in the sport. I guess Queens is a little light on things to do. You have the Mets if your in to that, and most tourists who fly into the city enter here through either JFK or Laguardia. So if your a tourist you probably won't be drawn to it unless who are staying with someone who lives there.

I did have a roommate from SI who I drove home several times during breaks when I was in college. He's a nice guy but it was a pain in the neck to drive on SI's roads which he did say are pretty infamous. I know I often hit traffic in SI when I was on my way home from Pennysylvania. I will give Staten Island credit for getting rid of that smell. It used to be really bad but I think those dumps they used to have there are closed or something, cause I haven't smelt it anymore.

WOW! You've certainly done some homework! Great info, 2323, thanks a lot.:hat: (How the heck do you know all this?) So good to have a local's insight to things. I'm trying to picture you driving around in your car looking for Old Indy's home.:p Will reply soon about the Staten Island evidence...

Really? That would mean fitting the store and actors with the logo and uniforms, etc. How close do they look to the real thing?

At the Meadowlands? I went there just before the 4th of July (about a month after "Crusade" came out). The 2nd time, in '96, was during one of the greatest adventures of my life (and that is no joke). Even though that's where all the NYC garbage goes, the place is dear to me.

Yes. Of all places...JONES BEACH!(y) How fitting.

The only beach in Jersey I've been to is Wildwood (twice). Thanks for chiming in, zenbird. I have good (& bad) memories of New Jersey but, overall, I like it. Re: the DVD. Noted & logged.;)

Speaking of George Hall...

Someone mentioned way earlier in the thread that he starred in a TV show, Remember WENN, during the latter half of the 1990's. From what I've seen, the show is about the lives of the staff members at a radio station in the 1940's. Hall plays Tom Eldridge, a kindly veteran Broadway doorman/administrator. (Of course Hall himself had been acting on Broadway since the forties!)

Here's the thing... aside from having two eyes in this show (no eyepatch here), and lacking the legendary Indy fedora and chin scar, Hall as Eldridge looks almost exactly like he does as Old Indy. He nearly always wears cardigan sweaters or three-piece suits, bow ties, and a pair of 1930's style horn-rimmed glasses with circular lenses, very similar to Indy's.

Parallel universe? :p

Here are some YouTube clips of the show. Judge for yourself.

Sorry to double post, but I ought to mention: I happen to have my own copies of the Young Indy bookends. A college friend of mine possessed recordings that he'd burned onto DVD, and I requested him to make copies for me. Unfortunately, he'd gotten the episodes that aired only in foreign markets second-hand, so they'd been sped up a bit (and gained a bit of audio noise) in conversion. They're quite watchable, though.

These are definitely different recordings than yours in some cases, Stoo. For instance, I have "New York, June 1920" in English recorded from Sky One, with no subtitles; and I have your missing segment from "Austria 1917"! So if you're in the market for lost seconds of footage, I might be able to help...

Will get back to you guys re: Staten Island but the post will be quite long and I wanted to address this seperately.
Something I need to rectify is obtaining about 10-15 seconds of the "Austria" opening bookend. While recording the show, the TV reception cut out for some reason and there was just static for awhile before the picture came back. If you watch Part 4, it the cut comes as Old Indy is talking to the mailwoman. I have never even seen the missing portion!:(

"World War One! Of course, we didn't number it at the time because we had no idea there was gonna be a sequel! Back then it was just...(approx. 10 secs. missing)...That's why I joined the French Intelligence Service." (End of opening narration).

The Old Indiana Jones Chronicles will not be complete without this. Help! fommes? Laird-O?

Hi Stoo. If you are still searching for Austria Bookend let me know as I have it. If you will be able to remember some time ago I also created DVD with archived bookends - here is the thread:

http://raven.theraider.net/showthread.php?t=18722

If there will be interest maybe I could finaly upload it somewhere so other people could made next-additional versions if there will be need,

Have been busy for a few months so I could't find some time to check this good old place as before.

Best Wishes.

Thanks for those links, ATMachine. I never watched the program when it aired and have only ever seen photographs.

Actually, I have an outstanding trade to fulfill with Fommes and he offered to provide me with the missing bit from "Austria". However, his may have subtitles and I would prefer a clean copy without them. (Do you guys know which country/channel your foreign episodes are from?)

In the meantime, can either of you fill me/us in with the missing dialogue from "Austria"?

Old Indy's missing dialogue IS....

"...Back then it was just the Great War. And I had recently returned to France from fighting in the Congo. And by then I had seen enough of the madness of this war. I no longer wanted to fight it; I only wanted to help end it. That's why I joined the French Intelligence Service."

Pretty powerful stuff. Shame you missed out on this, Stoo.

Thanks a lot, ATM!:hat: Can't wait to see the few missing seconds!

By the way...Re: my Old Indy channel on YouTube:

If I get one more subscriber who has "optimusprime" in their user name, I'm going to shut it down!

Imagine if in the year 2030 or something Harrison Ford redoes all of these Old Indy scenes!
The idea has been brought up before and it's not outside the realm of possibility. Ford was approached to do the bookends before G.Hall was hired but he thought the makeup might look goofy!

Ford might have done it if they were all done Mystery of the Blues style with a middle age Indy circa 1950. That way Ford wouldnt need any makeup, he would be playing Indy at the same age he was and their could have been mini bookend adventures like we saw in MOTB where something would remind him of an adventure from his youth and then he would start telling the story.

Just chiming in here to mention that my copy of Austria is not only subtitleless, but also logoless, as it's from the official VHS :)

Fans of this thread should pop over to the Digital Stuff thread, specifically this post with scans from Starlog #185 (Dec 1992) (mentioned in this thread here) which has an extensive interview with George Hall.
GREAT article, Tash! I know that you offered to post it but Sakis beat you to the punch. For me, it's nice to finally get a chance to read it and there's so much to comment on.

1) 17 bookends filmed in May 1992.
2) Jane Wyatt played Old Vicky Prentiss! I knew she looked familiar but could never place her face!
3) George Hall's suggestion of Indy marrying Old Vicky and basing bookends & an episode around that scenario.
4) The EYEPATCH & SCAR discussions.
5) George Hall avoiding "modeling his character on Harrison Ford".
6) No mention of George Hall being Canadian. (He's simply, "New York-based".)
7) Transforming "Wilmington's homes, stores & other buildings into the various locales required for each pair of bookends, often dramtically embellishing a location to suit the show's needs."
InexorableTash said:
It's got some great photos (PhotoShop fodder, Stoo!) and Hall's rather sweet thoughts on how the series should conclude.
There was only 1 photo in the article that I didn't have and that's the one with Old Indy & Old Vicky. Quite special considering it's OUTSIDE! (Photoshop fodder, INDEED!;))
