Little things you notice about the movies

Wow...I really don't see how you can't see it that way, especially since Donovan immediately responds with "you're welcome." Somebody write Steven Speilberg, I'm sure he would be happy to settle this debate. (y)
As Attila said,
"Donovan quite clearly knows that the sultan is actually saying "tanks." To say "you're welcome" in response, in full knowledge that "thanks" was not said, is a choice, and a wry one. What motivates this wryness? The knowledge that he's just received far more than he expected to get."
Have you never said "Your Welcome" to someone even though they didn't say thank you?
I do it all the time. Donovan said "Your Welcome" because the Sultan was thanking him through his actions instead of his words.

Oh, and, although I am occasionally accidentally guilty of this, I feel it imperative to warn you concerning double posting: Don't do it.:)

I thought since it wasn't about the same thing it would be ok?

If that isn't the case then man this board is strict on its rules.

...and as Attila said...ok yes, that is one way of looking at it.

Because I don't want to be cited in favor of a view I don't hold: my predominant view is that it is a joke about "thanks/tanks" "you're welcome" and not about an overwhelmingly generous trade. I'm just saying that it could, perhaps, be both.

I can agree with that...I just tend to lean more towards, as I said, it was a play on words with "tanks" being misinterpretated for "thanks."

Anyway, on to another topic...I always thought it was funny when Willie's voice got really deep when yelling at Indy in the raft... "I hate the water, I hate being wet and I hate YOU!" Really stands out to this day.

ha ha yeah!! I always thought she sounded like some mad alien. YOU!!

I love in TOD how Cate seemed to gather up all her strength for that one scream after her and Shorty cross the bridge and she sees Mola Ram standing there :D

In the French translation they also create a verbal misunderstanding where the King is detailing all the provisions Donovan will receive "at his disposal" or "at his service" which uses the word "merci" or "thanks". Except is this instance it's being used differently. Donovan hears "merci" and says "de rien" or "you're welcome".

"Tanks..."
"You're welcome"

Thats so cheap though. I prefer to think he was making a sharp, cheeky little comment. Dry wit worthy of Indy.

Absolutely, it's both. Acknowledging one interpretation doesn't rule out the other.
That's what makes the joke work so well.

Wouldn't a more literal translation for Donovan's reply be, "of nothing/it was nothing"?
(ex. "Think nothing of it.", "Don't mention it.", "Forget about it."...)

"You shall have: camels, horses, an armed escort, provisions, desert vehicles ... and tanks." (I'm pretty sure that's how the quote goes.)

The way I see it, if there had been an "and" in front of desert vehicles... then the "tanks" and "thanks" joke could have worked. Especially with the pause that exists before he says "tanks".

As it stands, though, I don't think Donovan's response was meant to make it sound like he misunderstood what was said.

Probably not a play on words, or an intentional one, especially since Donovan did get a tank.

Also, when the Sultan says and tanks, he is looking upwards and away from the others, as if he is imagining the army that he is going to give away for his car.

When Donovan's wife tells him that he's neglecting his guests, she nods to regard Professor Jones as she exits, but Indiana is facing away from her, examining the grail tablet and certainly wasn't facing her during the conversation enough to warrant the nod.

Just noticed this yesterday.

I always thought that Donovan was surprised by the offer of camels, horses, tanks, etc for what he was offering in return, hence the somewhat amused "You're Welcome" as NoTicket proposed.

Also: Marcus says he's a vegetarian shortly before Sallah meets him during the scene at the train station. I never really heard this--probably because I was always laughing at Marcus' denial of an offering of water because "fish make love in it!"

The scene in Raiders, when Marion is taking the shot glasses off the table, but she leaves one there =/ That always bothered me.

Speaking of the bar scene...always bothered me how Indy's pistol changes while he's firing.
