The All Things Alien Thread

There's a new deluxe DVD edition out of Close Encounters...like "Blade Runner" it's been presented in several versions, and the new DVD lets you choose between all 3.

Check out the 1998 "director's cut," by consensus the best version. If you like Spielberg enough to like Indiana Jones, it's definitely worth a few hours of your time...especially with these alien rumors bouncing around.

Actually, I can't stand Spielberg... Indiana Jones being the exception. ;)

"Real salute to a classic spielberg film cameo" revealed!!!!!!!!!

Raiders ahd snakes
Temple had bugs
Last Crusade had rats

Skull has SHARKS! - In a tip of the hat (OR FEDORA) to another Spielberg film - It has been revealed that Chevy Chase will make a cameo as a "land shark" to battle Indy in the climax on the film. :) This is amusing to old timers like myself or fans of classic SNL DVDs

;)

I might be Crazy but the Alien in the middle of the Crystal Skull looks JUST like the Ghosts that came out of the Ark. in Raiders...Could it be that we have seen the aliens before?

Please, let's try to keep all this alien talk in one thread as it can be neatly connected together.

To each their own, but that doesn't make sense to me. It's like saying, "I can't stand Scorcese, but I love Goodfellas." How do you separate the two?!

Interesting idea...

Here's the Raiders "ghost" pic, in case someone needs a refresher:

I wouldn't say they are exactly the same. But how different do skulls really look? So I guess it COULD be the same "species".

The Nose and mouth look very close... The Angle of the eyes could be the difference.....If you think about it, the Spirits in Raiders do not really look Human like do they?

Get on google images. Type "Human Skull" and compare to poster. Nope. Now try "Monkey or Gorilla Skull" Nope. Now google "Alien Skull". Sure there (most likely) all fanmade alien skulls but they all have something in common. The wide eye sockets. As far as im concerned this confirms aliens. Dead or Alive?

Actually I like Scorcese but I'm no fan of Goodfellas. ;) Though rather that than Casino. Ugh. His early work is amazing, his output since the 90s has been lackluster.

And I don't understand your question; Spielberg is (to my estimation) a lousy director. Doesn't mean he hasn't gotten lucky. Scorsese is a good director who just gets a lot wrong lately. Everyone has their ups and downs.

Sounds like two sides of a same coin to me.

Let me guess-- you fancy yourself an up-and-coming filmmaker? That post had pretentious film school stink all over it.

No. I fancy myself an aspiring filmmaker. Not an up-and-coming filmmaker. Aspirations and opinions don't make one pretentious. Though wantonly throwing the term "pretentious" around does seem to have that effect. Congratulations.

Being an aspiring filmmaker (as am I) you should know there isn't much luck to making a great film. Its a collaborations of skilled participants, and in my opinion, no film could be great without a talented director.

If you think that Spielberg got lucky as a filmmaker every once and a while, you are in the wrong line of work.

You're right and that was exactly my point. He was in the right place with the right people who had the right skills to produce a wonderful film. He's not an auteur in the mold of Kurosawa or Wilder or whomever else. At least I don't see him as such. (Again, these are my feelings toward him and his work). He was lucky... but the people he was working with were skilled.

Fair enough. Good to hear you mention Wilder and Kurosawa as auteurs, they are two of my favorite filmmakers.

I should qualify by saying that he (and Lucas) are excellent businessmen. That's where they excel. Certainly don't think either man is a great filmmaker though.

Heh... and uh... aliens.

Uh.... sorry... back to aliens.

Some filmmakers handle the business, pressure, leadership and the schedule/budget restraints better than others who excel in actual storytelling. Spielberg and Lucas I think both got where they are for being better at the former, though personally I think they (especially Spielberg) are also strong storytellers.
