"For the Fans"... what did Spielberg mean?

Searching the Raven you can see there are many opinions, points of view and disagreements between very different people, who have in common being indy fans.
I'm wondering what kind of fan Spielberg had in mind when he said he was doing Indy 4 for the fans.
Because there are many fans who will surely enjoy if the movie has lines like:

  • "I always knew some day you'd come walking back through my door, again"
  • "It's not the mileage, honey, it's the years"
  • "We named the dog Mutt"
Is that the idea of Fan Spielberg has?

Is this a "True Fan" Issue? ;)

Merry Christmas to everyone :D

I hope not... reminding us of lines from the last three by saying them again (or in basically the same way) is just crap to me. What does it say? It says, "Hey we had to re-use old good lines because we couldn't think of anything new and want you to remember how good those old movies were!"

No thanks. Just write something new that is as good.

Personally, I think it's enough of a reference to the others, by having a guy called 'Mutt' and having Marion there. As to what Indyfan, Spielberg meant. I honestly don't know. I don't think he meant it in a technical sense. He probalby meant a general fan, the promise of adventure in the same style as previous and something new for the character to develop and conclude the series. I think that is what we all can agree on.

I figure it means they try to keep the same tempo in KotCS as they try with the previous installments. Indy adventures are thrill rides, filled with exciting action scenes; there's not too many slow points in Raiders for example.

I always figured that what Spielberg meant is that they're making a film you can't distinguish from others in the terms of on-screen action and commitment. What comes to the previous movies, they may throw us a few bones, but I really doubt we're in for much of a reference-fest. Indy flicks have always been mostly standalone pieces, not parts of a greater saga.

That's the reply this thread needed.
How can people still "hope they wont be reminding us of lines from the last three films" and such.. Didn't the filmmakers already say -multiple times- they want to avoid that?

Initially I thought 'for the fans' meant that Spielberg had no strong personal reasons for making the film. He was still going to make the film he wanted to make but was encouraged by the lure of reuniting old friends and also a response to a long held cry from fans to make another.

But, then the follow up quote referring to 'each shot' and 'how is the audience going to respond?' had me thinking that Spielberg was merely using himself as a vessel, navigated by the will of the public.

I would hope that Spielberg's own intuition would guide his hand and that whilst Indy 4 was indeed 'for the fans', it was not 'by the fans'.

Because I saw the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

I saw Tranformers and it sucked. I saw Casino Royal and it sucked. I saw Jurrasic Park 3 and it sucked. What has that to do with KotCS you're wondering? Nothing! ;) :hat:

I'm guessing coz Spielberg was involved in JP3 and Transformers...:p Making the point that even "God" as John Hurt put it, can be involved with crappy films too?

But I liked Transformers. Casino Royale did suck and JP3 wasn't necessary.

JP3 did suck, Casino Royale did not and uhhmm... what was the other one. lol. Uhhh Transformers? Yeah. That was a great movie IMO. But then again, I didn't really watch the cartoon so I'm free of giving a crap how it matches up with it.

[Half-joking]Spielberg was just tipping us off that he thinks this movie is gonna suck.
I didn't like his words when he said that. The best thing Spielberg can do when he makes a film is forgetting the fans. But in a Comic Con, fans wouldn't like to hear something like that ;)

Casino Royale was pretty good... it was interesting again after the Pierce Brosnan era.

Casino Royale did not suck.

I think I have to explain: I don't think Casino Royal sucks, nor does Tranfsormers. ;) It was just a visualization to explain that imho an IndyFan shouldn't be bothered or feared 'cause of the SW prequels. ;) The PT is a different ballpark. ;)

Good point. I think in the end this is the essence of what will make or break this film. Spielberg can do it right, here's hoping he does.:whip:
