If Donovan had escaped?

What was he planning to do, presuming he escapes the Temple with the Grail?

Hitler won't take too kindly to being betrayed, and we know from Raiders that the Indyverse has "men in black" types in the government who we can presume have access to all sorts of paranormal technology.

I don't know if he would outright betray Hitler and the Nazis when he got his first chance. Donovan was too calculating and manipulative to foolhardily attempt to escape with his "prize", especially when surrounded by a convoy of Nazi agents. What I inferred from his rather vague plan, including lines such as "Hitler can have the Grail, but he can't take it with him", was that he intended to use the Grail as some sort of bargaining chip that he would loan out to the Nazis until eventually their own mortality met them.

Even if Donovan had selected the correct grail, he would still had been faced with the unexpected Faustian bargain of having to remain in the temple. It would have been useless to him.

He would've gone into hiding or returned the Grail to Germany. Probably the latter. Either way, he'd be doing so minus the immortality. The joke was on him as it was with Elsa. Even if he had stayed in the temple, too many people knew his whereabouts. And his character would never have the wherewithal to remain there. The Grail was never for him.
