For the second year running, Symphony Silicon Valley is teaming up with the Target retail chain to bring free live music to downtown San Jose. The Target Summer Pops series kicks off at 7 Saturday night on the campus of San Jose State University with an "American All-Stars" program. That means music by Aaron Copland, Duke Ellington, John Williams and others ? including George Gershwin, whose "Rhapsody in Blue" will feature star piano soloist and San Jose native Jon Nakamatsu. Peter Jaffe conducts.

At 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Jaffe leads a program that includes works by Gioacchino Rossini, Igor Stravinsky, Williams again ("Raiders of the Lost Ark"), Elmer Bernstein ("The Magnificent Seven") and Richard Wagner ("Ride of the Valkyries"). Longtime Mercury News sports columnist Mark Purdy narrates composer Steven Reineke's setting of "Casey at the Bat." And this time, there's free ice cream (before the concert) and free music.

All concerts are on the lawn at the center of campus; enter at Fourth and West San Carlos streets. Bring beach chairs, blankets and picnic baskets.

John Williams to debut new sound system at Riverbend

Riverbend is getting a new sound system for the Pops, and John Williams will be leading a tribute to Erich Kunzel.

An HK Audio Cohedra sound system will debut Saturday at Riverbend. Costing $300,000 to $400,000, it is custom-designed to be used at Riverbend as well as in Music Hall, where orchestra officials say it will dramatically improve the sound quality at Pops concerts.

Cincinnati is the first orchestra in the world to own the sophisticated, touring sound system.

?It is actually quite unusual that an orchestra buys their own touring system,? says HK Audio sales head Christian Stumpp. ?As the CSO has several venues where they play in (the two pavilions at Riverbend, Music Hall and others), they needed a mobile touring system ? . that they can move from venue to venue. For the CSO, this makes way more sense than a fixed install, and for us it makes this whole story so unique and interesting.?

Audio press from Europe, the United States and Mexico will be at Saturday?s concert to report about the orchestra?s new sound system and its partnership with HK Audio. The deal marks the company?s entry into the American market.

Located in St. Wendel, Germany, the firm has designed Cohedra systems mainly in Europe, southern Africa, Asia and Australia. Its outdoor venues include the Nuremberg Classic Open Air, Germany?s largest classical outdoor festival, attracting audiences of up to 70,000. The system also has been in use at the Bach Festival in Leipzig Germany, the Handel Festival in Halle, Germany, and in arena tours of ?Carmina Burana? and ?Aida? in Europe.

HAMILTON ? Facing a financial shortfall, the Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra has initiated a fundraising project with a goal of $10,000, in hopes of preventing cancellation of a John Williams tribute concert later this season.

?This is a brand-new effort. It?s tough in this economy. We had a $20,000 shortfall at the end of the fiscal year,? said Paul Stanbery, the director of the orchestra.

With all the uncertainty in Washington right now about whether tax cuts are going to expire, funds have been slow to come in, Stanbery said.

?Our donors are very cautious, and understandably so,? he said. ?We rely on local folks who run businesses or have money tucked away. We?re talking about eliminating concerts if donations don?t pick up.?

The concert in question is the one that pays tribute to film composer John Williams, who has written the scores to some of the most popular films of all time, including all the ?Star Wars? movies and almost all of Steven Spielberg?s films.

There is no scheduled date for this concert, but if it does go forward, there will be a contest for people who come in the best costume from a film with a John Williams score.

The fundraiser is listed on the orchestra?s Web site at www.hfso.org. As of Monday, Sept. 27, it states the fundraiser has taken in $575. People may donate there, but there is a problem with the site?s e-mail address book mechanism that is expected to be fixed in October, Stanbery said. If people wish, they can contribute through via the regular ?donors? link, or mail a check to the orchestra at 1 High St., Hamilton OH 45011.

The fundraiser has a goal of $10,000. The organization has made up the other $10,000 of the shortfall by making budget cuts, including eliminating some rehearsals and a chamber music concert from the Mozart Festival next year, he said.

The orchestra?s first concert of the season will be the Tillman Memorial Concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at the New Life Vineyard Church in Hamilton. The free concert will combine the HFSO with the Miami University Symphony Orchestra.
