The Raven Adventurers: New Begining

Tom placed his hand firmly on Ben?s shoulder, making an attempt to keep him steady. ?Hopefully all our questions will be answered once we reach New York City. You just have to hold on till then. I?m sure Marcs will know how to break the curse you?re under.?

Smiling for the first time since they had landed in Hawaii, Jones backed up his claim, ?if not we?ll think of something, together.?

Ben forced a grin--just enough to convince the others he was okay. As they neared the jet, he hung back just slightly, and looked around at the fuel pumps, the wood, all the flammable things. He then muttered a silent prayer, and moved ahead.

KDuncan boarded the jet once again. Turning to face Tom, she asked, "How long will it take to reach New York?"

Catching hold of the edge of the forward compartment Tom pulled himself once again up and into the pilot?s seat. He smiled softly as the glass above him slid and locked into place. Normally he wouldn?t feel as relaxed as he did now, he always hated to leave the small paradise behind and reenter back into the real world. But unlike before he wasn?t alone and was eager to get back home.

Marcus will probably be worried sick?the thought flashed through the archeologist?s mind as he started up the jet and flicked it?s running lights on. A green glow splashed over his face and he sighed lightly.

A soft pounding on the side of the jet echoed through both the compartments that the three adventurers were seated in. Their eyes sharpened and they looked out through the clear glass encompassing them.

Jones caught sight of the flight attendant banging his hand across the side of the jet under the second compartment that Ben was seated in. He was waving a clipboard at them.

?Oh, great?? Tom muttered and slapped a hand to his forehead.

Ben looked outside, and then up to the front of the plane. Tom wasn't exactly thrilled. He hoped this didn't have something to do with the near-catastrophe a few moments ago.

A bead of sweat rolled down the young archeologist’s neck as the flight attendant motioned for him to open the compartment. He knew what was on the other side of the clipboard, why the man was so anxious to get him out of the jet.

Jones shook his head slowly, his eyes shutting as he willed the moment away. A name slipped quietly from his lips, “Marcus…”

Something had happened and whatever it was Tom had a bad feeling deep in his stomach that it wasn’t anything good. His old friend had always been reliable when it came to covering his expenses, he trusted Marcus just as much as the British curator trusted him. There was a reason why their gas hadn’t been covered with a charge from the museum. Jones didn’t want to sit around and wait to find out.

“Sorry this flight won’t stop until we reach New York,” Tom’s rugged voice echoed dully through the radio in both compartments. Gritting his teeth he knew that he would be jumping right back in the fire, this probably wouldn’t go over well. He didn’t care. All that his mind was set on now was the museum and his longtime friend. “We don’t have time for this…” with a bit of rage in his deep voice the archeologist lunged the throttle down and the jet took off down the small sandy runway.

KDuncan, strapped firmly in her seat, gripped the armrest as they picked up speed at a surprising rate. The attendent waved his arms in the distance yelling, papers flying around on the clipboard. As she felt the craft lift upwards, she couldn't help but grin a little. She knew this would probably put Tom in hot water, but somehow she still got some enjoyment out of it. She glanced over at Tom and saw the angry expression on his face. She changed her expression to look more determined after that -- who knows what he would have thought if he'd looked over and seen her grinning.

Tom looked over and saw KDuncan?s expression change once they were air born and safely away. He was somewhat surprised when he caught her grin in the corner of his eye, but shrugged off the feeling and concentrated more on flying the lightning fast jet.

After what seemed like forever a mellow beeping echoed around the forward compartment. A red light flashed in Jones’ face and a feeling of uneasiness washed over him. He didn’t know what he’d done to cause the alarm and was afraid that something was wrong with the jet.

But just as quickly as it started it stopped and the gentle hum of the engines reclaimed the silence in both compartments. Tom chuckled softly in relief and threw KDuncan and Ben a reassuring smile.

Abruptly a piercing crackle emitted over the radio and Tom to jolted letting go of the helm. The jet rolled sharply to one side and plummeted downward in a dive. Throwing his hands out and pulling back on the rudder he attempted to regain control.

A groan from the engines told Jones that they were in for a bumpy ride and as the clouds darted past them alarms and blinking lights flashed all around in front of him. Faintly over the radio a panicky voice could be heard, “you’re losing to much altitude…you’re not going to make it to the runway…you must regain control!”

Ben frowned at the message, feeling the tilting of the plane. As he steadied himself, the blue glow returned to his hand. His face was etched with panic.

"No, no!! Guys, look out!!!"

The lightning shot out, the force launching him backwards into the floor. Expecting the lightning to shred the ship to pieces, he was wonderfully surprised to see the ship absorbing it. The lightning soaked into it, spreading safely throughout until the whole ship seemed to be carried in some kind of force field of the stuff. To even greater surprise he noticed a groaning, and a tilting, until finally the ship was righted, and soaring back into the air.

Tom breathed a sigh of relief and eased the jet onto the icy pavement of the runway. He was thankful that this time he was able to land safely, without having to jump out of a burning plane. The jet skimmed to a stop and Jones flicked a few switches. The hum from the engines died away quickly as the glass above both compartments slid back.

Jumping out of the pilot?s seat Tom leap down to the ground as KDuncan eased Ben out of his seat. ?All right, lower him down to me and I?ll catch him.? Tom glanced up with his arms outstretched and KDuncan noticed a hint of panic flash through his dark eyes.

KDuncan helped lift Ben up and gently lower him into Tom's arms. She hopped out onto the runway. "Say Tom," she said, "I've been here before... my old friend Jodi runs the place, good airstrip. She has charter private flights, joy rides, nice place. Do you know her too?"

Tom slung Ben over his shoulder and glanced over to KDuncan, “can’t say that our paths have crossed before…is she a partner perhaps?”

KDuncan trotted after Tom. "Yeah, we met awhile back at some school club, she always wanted to be a pilot and we had good times together. I lost track of her eventually after she got her pilot's license, it'll be good to see her again."

Jones turned back and smiled. Even though it hadn’t went as he had planned, he was now back home. He’d probably never admit it, but after all the globe trotting, after all the exploring and near death experiences, he was glad to be back in New York City. “Yes, it’ll also be good to see Indy and Marcus again.”

He’d been away for far too long, but was now back. He had come back as a different man, the deaths of two of his friends forever changing him. He had been awakened to a new beginning, leaving his gloomy and death ridden past behind him.

Shifting the weight of Ben’s body onto his other shoulder Tom grunted as a blast of bitter frosty air blew in his face. “Too bad, it seems we brought the snow and cold air along with us.”

"Yeah.." KDuncan agreed, as the chilly air came upon them. "Say, there's Jodi, coming out of the building!" she pointed.

Tom?s eyes shifted toward a small building that had a hanger connected to its side. A woman entered his field of vision; she seemed to be really happy to see KDuncan and had given him a suspicious glance. Probably wondering why I?m carrying an unconscious man over my shoulder?the thought instantly flashed through the young archeologist?s mind and he smirked as the woman came closer.

"Hey, Jodester!" KDuncan said and gave Jodi a greeting pat on the shoulder. "This is my friend Tom and the guy he's.. carrying is Ben. Ben just passed out or something so he'll be okay soon." Jodi looked the two guys over for a second and smiled politely. "How's Philo getting along?" KDuncan said, referring to Jodi's husband. "Oh, he's alright, thank you.... I see you're still getting into trouble." Jodi said laughingly, then invited everyone in to the building.
