Which Wine to whine about . . .

Pitty this thread wasn't about beer or alcoholic beverage in general. I've discovered some great drinks on my travels.

as for wine I tend to stick with most Australia and South African wines, I find them a safe bet. If I'm buying from the supermarkewt it is usually Jacobs Creek or Kumala.

Sonoma Valley

By no means am a wine conaisseur but 1 1/2 weeks ago I was in Sonoma for a wedding. Sonoma is essentially the
birthplace of California and the original Bear Flag itself. The wedding was at the Beuna Vista Carneros which is the
oldest winery in CA (est. 1857). Their specialties are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah. We brought a bottle
of Pinot Noir back with us. The ceremony & dinner was oustide in a luscious tree grove nestled beside the building.

buena%20vista%20building.jpg

There were "activities" in the days leading up to the main event. One was a "sip & cycle" to different wineries but
it was so damned hot we never rented bikes and had a shuttle bus take everyone around. It became "sip & shuttle".
Sonoma also had a place where you could go up in vintage aircraft (a WW2 AT6, a P-40 Warhawk, several bi-planes...)
Didn't get to meet up with roundshort since he was away that weekend. Maybe next time, roundy!:hat:

Spent Monday & Tues. in San Francisco. It was my 1st time there and luckily we had good weather since I hear
it's usually foggy. What a funky town! Loved it much better than L.A. Did all the usual tourist stuff. Crab dish
in Sausalito, Chinatown, the sea-lions at Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, cable car ride, sushi for dinner and a
shopping spree at the gigantic Virgin store. We stayed at the King George, Union Square and caught a late
viewing of "Skull" on the hotel TV. Couldn't find any Rice-a-Roni, though.:mad: Do they still make that stuff?
It's the San Francisco Treat!

Incidentally, the Buena Vista founder (a Hungarian immigrant who is considered the "grandfather of modern,
Califonia wine-making") met his untimely end when he was devoured by alligators in a swamp river!:eek:

Stoo, sounds like a great trip! I am sorry I missed you I was hocking my wine at Sundance wine fest in Utah. The highlight was a dinner with Robert Redford himself, a really cool dude.

Pale, what are you talking about, I thought Napa Rose was your favorite wine country (I think their revenue alone classifies them as a country!)

What are you trying to say? Napa Rose is like Vatican City -- except the wine tastes good?

I'll tell you where. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talking about a little place called....Napa.

Whoops, wrong thread! :p

Love for Napa

Notes: On Wine Tasting

The sun rolls back its eider-down duvet
and rose indolent from the hills bouquet.
A grape-berry moth brushes by my cheek
as I ascend along the cobbled way.
This vineyard grows beside a withered creek
that ancient plant that?s shroud in great mystique;
I journey past the history preserved
to mingle, taste, and joy in manner chic.
With glassed and ballasted racks to serve,
this hallowed hall adorned in polished wood,
I saunter to a maiden draped in red
who patiently attends to my hors-d-oeuvre.
A flush of white to cotton up my head
redolent with a hint of gingerbread;
Encouraged by intoxicating spice
I covet for a vintage gone unsaid.
She whispers in my ear ardent advice
?This cabernet is certain to entice
and even more, should you sojourn outdoors;
to walk the vintners path a time or thrice?.
With glass in hand, I wander corridors
of vines that are protected by the rose;
her words ring true, the vintner?s plot reveals
surrounded by her passion so exposed.
At first, I fear my charlatan appeal
is blushed in my vain effort to conceal
my nakedness within this land of hers;
a vineyard toiled and nurtured in her zeal.
I stopped to bless this moment of grandeur
and realize not all will wander here,
for wine may be an epicurean delight
but vineyards offer pleasures for years.

This reminds me that one of the places we visited in Sonoma was the Ravenswood Winery. Zinfadel is their thing.
You guys must know it: http://www.ravenswood-wine.com/home.htm

Indeed, it is a staple at the Horse house, (or is that a stable at the Pale house). How was the winery?

If your wine tasting in Texas Greune doesn't hold a candle to Fredricksberg. Its a short car ride west of there. If your planning to get Boozy in Texas though you really need to be at the Shiner brewery.

Ravenswood was a bit more rustic than Buena Vista but I liked it. Warm, friendly and it had a cool, western atmosphere.

Have you ever seen the movie, "Bottle Shock" about the famous blind-taste test in '76 Paris where the California wines stuck it to the French? I just saw it and parts were filmed at Beuna Vista!:D It even shows the town square in Sonoma (although it's supposed to be Napa.) I'm sure roundshort has seen this since it premiered at Sundance a year ago.
