Yeah, he was the one who dies with Nads McCoy on Mt. Teebagtime. I believe, if memory serves that Juicy Simmons was the one who betrayed them.

hahaha you said "nads"......

ThePulp.Net offers a lot of information on Doc Savage, as well as a number of links to other sites with information on the character. You can also learn about some of the other prominent heroes from that same era there as well, such as The Shadow.

Doc Savage is actually pretty cheap at most used book stores. Just look under "Robeson, Kenneth." They're...imaginative...but very much products of their time. In my humble opinion, they don't hold up quite as well as some other classic pulpsters (Talbot Mundy, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert Howard), but given that most can be found for about $3-5 they're worth a shot.

Generally plots involve Doc and his team fighting gangsters in the city for half a book and then transferring to some exotic country, whipping out sci-fi gadgets for a bit, and then letting Doc go at it mano-a-mano with somebody for the climax.

Doc Savage is one of the greatest ever fictional action adventure heroes.

I read a lot of Doc Savage stories when I was younger...........(ie...a while ago)

The Indy similarities are that most of Doc's adventures are set in the thirties. One of Doc's multiple sidekicks ......(don't remember which one) is an archaeologist. And many of the adventures involve archaeology to some extent.

Great stories....lots of imagination....set in the thirties....great villains....dirigibles....headquarters in the Empire State Building......

If you like Indiana Jones then you will definitely like Doc Savage.

A while back (like a long while back) I was at the Technicolor building on the Universal lot chatting with an acquaintance who told me that Shane Black was writing the script for "A certain famous fedora wearing adventurer"... and I automatically assumed he was referring to Indiana Jones so I went ahead and threw that little rumor out here at the Raven...

A little bit after that, one of our "top men" (atilla or moedred I think, can't remember) corrected me saying... well your acquaintance is kind of in the know... he's actually trying to pen a Doc Savage film.

So time went on and years and years later still no Doc savage film...

Then Ironman 3 happened, written and directed by Shane Black. Now that the Ironman film did so well, Shane has been given some leeway to pick his next project...

Yup... you guessed right. He's dustin' off ole Doc Savage. Just thought I'd mention this because it's the closest thing to Indiana Jones we'll be seeing in the cinema for a long while.

I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that the new Tomb Raider flick makes it to theatres before this, the new Tarzan movie, and anything related to Indiana Jones. I'll also put very real money on Pat Savage being elevated in prominence, and Monk, Renny, Long Tom, Ham, and Johnny will be downplayed.

Just please give Savage a real head of hair, and not weird Brillo pad like do he sports on a lot of the books.

For anybody who is interested in seeing Doc Savage, Warner Bros. original attempt at filming the first book is available on Blu-ray via the Warner Archive.

Ron Ely certainly looks the part, but I can't vouch for the rest of the movie.

I'll take that bet since pre production got shut down on Tarzan till 2014 and the new Tomb Raider film just recently hired their screenwriter.

Black is working from a draft he wrote years ago...

I like glazed donuts by the way.

Which, for all intents and purposes, is still mired in development hell. There seems to be far more traction on the Tarzan front. But, we do like to give equal time, so...

IGN sat down with Shane Black and asked him for an update on the movie. While no actual news was forthcoming, he did confirm that the story would remain a period piece. Black also commented on the difficulties of finding an actor who was physically up to the role. Chris Hemsworth's name came up.

Shane Black said:
They kind of gotta be tall. He's the perfect physical specimen and when people look at him, they're overawed by the sort of symmetry and perfection he exudes," explained Black. "You need someone magnetic and someone a little bit off because that's the fun of the character. He's been secluded from people and kept from any social niceties for so long that he's become a savant."

In more tangible news, Dynamite Entertainment has finally gotten around to reviving Doc Savage in comic book format. Starting in December, Chris Roberson (Superman, The Shadow, Star Trek) takes on the writing duties with art from Bilquis Evely.

Comic Book Resources has a nice interview with Roberson, as well as a higher resolution image of the first issue's cover.

Chris Roberson said:
This is a big story that we're telling in these first eight issues, starting in 1933 at the point where readers were first introduced to Doc Savage, and continuing on through the years to the present day. Just because the Doc Savage Magazine ended publication in the late '40s didn't mean that Doc's adventures ended there. He kept on going, and in this storyline we'll see what happened.

The good Doctor lost this bet in spectacular fashion -- looks like everything will make it into theatres before this -- but those persistent rumblings of Hollyweird revisiting the original pulp heroes are paying large dividends. We're getting pretty much everything I mentioned before Doc Savage, but it sounds like Shane Black's version of The Man of Bronze will enter into production after he completes work on Predator. Now The Holloywood Reporter is indicating that The Rock has signed on to star as Clark "Doc" Savage in the untitled production.

The Hollywood Reporter said:
The actor said on Monday that he would be teaming with director Shane Black to bring the pulpy action hero to life in a new film, which had been in development at Sony Pictures.

Black is planning to tackle the project after a Predator reboot for Fox.

Johnson wrote on Monday that he had sat down with screenwriters Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry over the weekend "to chop up creative and break story on this very cool project."

Also, he noted, "the #1 reason I'm excited to become Doc Savage.. HE'S A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO!"

It's OFFICIAL: For all comic book fans you already know the world's first superhero (pre-dating Superman) is the "Man of Bronze" himself Clark "Doc" Savage. Want to thank my bud director/writer Shane Black and his writing team Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry for flying in from LA and sitting with me and our @sevenbucksprod's producer @hhgarcia41 on this Memorial Day weekend to chop up creative and break story on this very cool project. Comic book fans around the world know that the cool thing about "Doc" Savage is that he's the inspiration for Superman. First name Clark, called "Man of Bronze", retreats to his "Fortress of Solitude" in the Arctic etc etc. Doc was physically and mentally trained from birth by his father and a team of scientists to become the perfect human specimen with a genius level intellect. His heightened senses are beyond comprehension. He can even identify a women's perfume from half a mile away. He is literally the master of everything. But here's the #1 reason I'm excited to become Doc Savage.. HE'S A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO! Confidently, yet innocently he has zero social graces whatsoever due to his upbringing so every interaction he has with someone is direct, odd, often uncomfortable and amazingly hilarious. After speaking for hours w/ Shane Black I can see why the creator of Superman took only the best parts of Doc Savage and leaving the "weirdo" part behind. But to us, it's that "weirdo" part that makes Clark "Doc" Savage dope! Can't wait to sink my teeth into this one of a kind character.
