Trilogy Weekend

Rocket Surgeon said:
Allen is back the following weekend as the original whip-cracking, rip-snorting Indiana Jones trilogy is screened one day at a time: 1981?s Raiders of the Lost Ark (Oscar nominated for Best Picture), 1984?s Temple of Doom and 1989?s Last Crusade will fill the Victoria with John Williams? majestic scores and Harrison Ford?s iconic performance as the weary, hard-hitting, globe-trekking archaeologist. No lame CGI Crystal Skulls here ? just the real deal.

August 13-15: Indiana Jones Weekend

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Unlike the recent Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the 1981 Raiders of the Lost Ark is a movie freed from the responsibility of fatherhood, much less adulthood. Then 39, Harrison Ford was more like the embodiment of the boyish dreams of producer George Lucas and director Steven Spielberg. Sure, he makes manly eyes at Karen Allen, but the lust?like the violence, in which movie-Nazis can be killed like flies?is only as real as in the movie serials that inspired the Indy franchise. In a thoroughly satisfying, always kinetic way, this first Jones flick lives inside its own archetypes, and Ford is too disciplined an actor to wink at the artifice. He always seems sincerely, physically invested in this iconic role, whether he?s outrunning boulders, being dragged under trucks, or recoiling from snakes. He?s a moonlighting, grave-robbing, rogue scholar, nobody?s hero. Twenty-seven years later, the filmmakers have filed those ruffian edges off his character. (And also smoothed his voice: Is there some computer process for removing the effects of 40 years of Marlboro smoking?) Here is Indy as we remember him: cocky, an improviser, irresponsible, but true to his course. He?s a man you want to be?not the same thing as being a role model.

The Lexi Cinema will be running three outdoor screening events at the end of this summer. Each screening will be themed and will include live entertainment.

The UK’s friendliest community cinema, The Lexi in Kensal Rise, teams up with outdoor cinema expert The Screen On The Green this September, to launch northwest London’s first ever large-scale cinema al fresco extravaganza.

A mini carnival of film and fun, The Lexi Cinema in the Park will be on location in two of the area’s best-loved parks for three special events. As the sun sets over the trees, a cast of hundreds will play their part in this trilogy of exciting new productions, directed by the country’s first social enterprise boutique cinema - run predominantly by local volunteers, donating 100% of its profits to charity.

The series premiere takes place at a magically transformed, award-winning Roundwood Park - in association with Brent Council - Saturday 18th, a rousing, all-adventure climax in the shape of Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Specially costumed ushers will open the gates for each event at 7.00pm, welcoming guests to the festively dressed parks, inviting them to soak up the live themed entertainment, assemble their picnic from the variety of food and drink goodies on sale, before unrolling their blanket and taking in the sunset as the main feature lights up the huge, 8 x 6 metre inflatable screen.

Founder-dreamer Sally Wilton explains The Lexi’s expansion into mobile cinema: “The Lexi’s mission is to bring the magic of cinema to the local community. The outdoor screenings in the park allow us to recreate the special experience of a visit to The Lexi on a much larger scale, whilst somehow still retaining the warm, welcoming intimacy of our beautiful little cinema. The usual Lexi touches, such as film introductions, great wine, live music and friendly, passionate local volunteers will all be there. For these shows, however, The Lexi’s incredible, overhead auditorium light installation will be replaced by sunset, moonlight and a blanket of stars!”

Together, The Lexi and The Screen on the Green have planned over 50 similar events across the rest of London and the Southeast this year, with plans to go way above and beyond that number in 2011. This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. To be continued…
