I'd say it was the latter, not because he was concerned about profits, but because he (believe it or not) had limited funds right before he made the prequels. He seems to have kept it going as long as he could. But nowadays, since he
does basically unlimited funds, he's bluntly said several times in recent interviews that he's going to continue his two Star Wars TV series, regardless of ratings and/or ublic and critical reaction.
BTW, someone asked him the OP's question at the PALEY festival in early 2007. He replied along the lines that
Young Indy was a product of its time; Pretty much every one had gotten older and that it wasn't something that he could simply pick up where he left off of anyway (like he did with the Star Wars prequels and KOTCS).
