For all of George Lucas' money could he not have funded his own made-for-TV movies to finsh the complete story of Young Indy?

He could have funded their production, yes. But he'd still have to get some network to show them for it to be of any use.

True however he would have to get enough sales to keep going. I don't know if that would have been possible considering how many feel about the show with it's educational flavour.

Presumably he didn't do them because either he wanted to move on to new things (we know what those were), or he didn't see it as having financial potential. He's a producer as well as director and writer, so money matters to him.

I'd say it was the latter, not because he was concerned about profits, but because he (believe it or not) had limited funds right before he made the prequels. He seems to have kept it going as long as he could. But nowadays, since he does basically unlimited funds, he's bluntly said several times in recent interviews that he's going to continue his two Star Wars TV series, regardless of ratings and/or ublic and critical reaction.

BTW, someone asked him the OP's question at the PALEY festival in early 2007. He replied along the lines that Young Indy was a product of its time; Pretty much every one had gotten older and that it wasn't something that he could simply pick up where he left off of anyway (like he did with the Star Wars prequels and KOTCS).

Young Indy pioneered a lot of digital effects techniques for ILM, it was like guinea pig show in that respect as well. A lot of what they learnt was applied to the Star Wars prequels.
