I've just finished watching Spring Break Adventure and I was wondering. Has there ever been a reason given for Demeitrios losing his hand and getting it replaced with a hook?

he had a normal hand in Curse of the Jackal in 1908, so I'm wondering if there was any books or anything that explained how or when he lost it between 1908 and 1916

I don't know of any official backstory for this given anywhere, but given that he regularly works with explosives, one obvious possible (even likely) explanation pretty much suggests itself...

Although that is from a Choose Your Own Adventure book that doesn't have Indy recognising Claw or the jackal.

Mystery solved. He blew his hand off in an explosives accident and changed his name to Claw. Though that book is odd, since Indy does not recognise either the Jackal or Claw. Even though he should

I've always imagined that "Claw" became a local nick-name rather than something he called himself. He might have indeed changed his name but Demetrios never appeared to have much of a sense of humour. Imagine chopping your own leg off by accident and asking people to call you Peg Leg or Stumps.

(Something else I mentioned in another thread is that the actor, Vic Tablian, seems to have broken his nose sometime between filming "Raiders" and the YIJC stuff.)

He probably broke it in that fall he took as Barranca. Hence why we don't see him much as Monkey Man in the rest of the movie compared to Barranca.

That's what I was surmising in the other thread but I would say possibly broke it there rather than probably.

The jungle scenes with Barranca were shot after he had already played the Monkey Man character.

One thing I've often wondered is, why does Demetrios steal the jackal head and keep it for 8 years? One would think he'd have tried to $ell it off. I guess he wanted it for his own, private collection.

He had alot of relics and artifacts hidden in his Mexican home. So perhaps he was waiting till he had enough pieces before making a lucrative business out of it. Or perhaps he didn't think it was valuable enough since the gem eyes were missing.
